Description More than just a broken bike, more than just a type preference, more than a tomboy, a token female companion or an adolescent fantasy.

Misty from Pokemon, standing beside the tall grass outside the Viridian Forest. I had this very loose notion of this picture being set after Misty left the Cerulean Gym (telling her sisters that she wouldn't come back until she was the greatest water pokemon trainter, etc, etc) but prior to her meeting with Ash. I'd like to think Misty's life had some relevance worth dwelling on that didn't just tie into her participation in the main plot of the story or ended when she left it. Such is my thoughts on the matter.

My goal in drawing Misty here was to try to blend realistic elements and "anime" or "manga" -esque elements, in hopes of producing a version of her that looked recognizably like Misty from the cartoon show but at the same time at least almost looked like someone you could imagine seeing walking down the street. Of course, this means essentially stylistic parts of her appearance, like her eyes, are still very anime-esque, while more peripheral parts, like her shoulder for example, are designed to look much more like that of a real person.

The background was chosen for several reasons. Aside from a personal affection for the early days of the story, which favors both Misty and the Viridian Forest itself, the environment provides a good selection of dark greens and blues that will provide maximum contrast with Misty's bright orange hair and yellow clothing. Also, having a treeline in the background makes it easy to divide the image in thirds, for composition purposes, as we get a nice line from the bottom and the tops of the trees. Keeping the detail low in the background and high in the foreground also helps add a feeling of depth and draws your attention to where it's supposed to be (I.e. with Misty herself).

This is my fourth attempt at producing manga style people with this latest tutorial, and my fourth ever if you discount some barely informed sketches in did in high school after a friend explained a few loose details about how to make one type of anime eyes and how to draw a 3/4 post female head shape (most of which instructions I misremembered immediately). This should not be confused with my fourth attempt at drawing ever, of course. This one was done as my practice piece for the profile (side-view) head shape tutorial. Although I started based on that tutorial, I honestly went back and retweaked the head shape so many times to get a more perfect match for Misty's features that I don't really think it's been very relevant to the final picture anymore.

I googled for a number of different pictures of Misty in the process of doing the research on this, in order to get all her features right, but none of them had exactly this pose. No reference was used on the background at all.

I spent a great deal more time on this one than on the earlier "anime" drawings I posted here. This marks the end of my buffer for uploads here. I don't know what you'll see tomorrow, if anything.

Drawn with paint on a small canvas using Nintendo's New Art Academy ap, then imported to PC and cleaned up and expanded using The GIMP 2.8.10.
