Description Digital practice. Use a photo reference for skull shape only. So I only did a study of the skull then the rest is from memory. Kinda happy I'm starting to learn what features look best to make something realistic. But those scales killed me..

OKAY LET ME RANT. I'm sorry if I sound like a jerk, but there's two( i think more) things that bother me about "paleoart" especially with more amateur work.. So I get tired of seeing people just take exactly copies of skeletal diagrams and just add skin on top of it. Like its so bad that I can always recognize "oh thats one of Scott Hartman's poses...." and aren't people tired of drawing the same generic dinosaurs from the exactly same pose? All of them only ever have minor differences and then theres the bunch that are all inaccurate..
I also get tired of seeing people make the largest theropods into these badass monsters with overly proportioned teeth and claws and spines and crocodile skin while screaming into the air. Like its the epitome of annoying dinosaur fanboy and is worse when someone tries to pass it off as "paleoart."

sorry, but im starting to really get into my field and people that don't do their research are starting to urk me. and im just a big jerk.

I think that you're free to be "a jerk", since you're simply bored and annoyed by lack of creativity, artistic freedom and seeing fresh things.
I understand that and I agree. Sure, staying very close to reference and drawing a prehistoric animal from profile is good exercise and teaches the one who draws it about basic body plan
and proportions, but then it's not hard to add some details and small tweaks that will add personal touch to it- be it speculative traits, or be it slightly changed pose maybe to show a behaviour.

you drew Jane beautifully, those scales were totally worth it

oh boy i forgot about this image and rant.
I guess what i was also trying to say at the time is that there are some artists on here who i dont wanna name that honestly just do the same thing over and over again. To each their own. but i've had a growing distaste for ultra dinosaur fanboys and the constant 'jurassic park files' collections of dinosaurs.

But hey thank you, i'd love to get a chance to repaint this piece in color someday

I think I even know who you're talking about.....I think they just are afraid to step out their comfort zone
and improve drawing skills- since when I started drawing dinosaurs long time ago I also drew them in profile pic
or in almost copy-paste poses with very slight changes.

haha, its possible. but im sure there are several. I know there are a few that aren't super popular so i never see they're stuff unless i really dig for them. but anyways.

Oh, don't get me wrong, i exclusively drew dinosaurs in the profile side view for forever. But it gets boring. and I get a lot of amateurs do it now to simply practice. nothing wrong with that, who am i to judge what you draw.(even though i am cause im a terrible person) i guess it goes back to just the jurassic park dinosaur file series that are constantly being made by artists and are literally just regular dinosaurs with a copy and pasted wiki description. idk. i dont really care about it now, i suppose i was annoyed at the time when i made this image several years ago.
