kevinbolk — James Cameron's Mascot Comic

Description I wrote this little strip just before Sunday's Academy Awards. I have to admit, I found it pretty delicious that Cameron got beat out for Best Picture by his ex-wife with film that cost $16 million. I live for that kind of poetic irony.

And Best Dirctor, which I thought was pretty awesome. That being said, I still have yet to watch The Hurt Locker.

He actually wanted Kathryn to win I saw most of the nominees and I agree that Hurt Locker deserved to win. I did like Avatar a lot, but mostly for its out-of-this-world, eye-candy FX. Story-wise it was like Dances With Wolves meets Pocahontas, but I think it's safe to say James is like George Lucas in that he isn't so much concerned with having a strong story as he is blowing your mind visually. All that having been said, this li'l strip is right on the money (no pun intended...I think) and thus hilarious. Thank you, sir!

I found it funny that the two films everyone was fighting about weren't even the best on the list. District 9 and Inglourious Basterds were both kickass, and District 9's message was less preachy than Avatar's and better made than Hurt Locker, but not so much as a mention for them. Poor prawns.

Kairimun1988 In reply to TankCopter [2010-09-21 10:06:13 +0000 UTC]

The cherry on top: District 9 was the only one of those 4 movies that's on Netflix's instant Queue.

I haven't seen ANY of them, actually.

I've noticed many of the better movies are those that don't even get any attention.......

I'm also stating this now. I've been holding it in for a while.

I. HATE. AVATAR. =.= And I am NOT ashamed....

Anyway. How was Basterds? I never got to see it.

I for one really liked Basterds, but as with any Tarantino movie, I've heard mixed opinions on it. Lots of Nazi-scalping, movie-shooting fun, if you like that kind of thing and don't mind Tarantino taking a few liberties with how World War 2 played out.

I might look into it. I might just rent it off Netflix... that is.. once we get the OTHER 100 dvds we want. =w=
Thank you.

Hehehe, awesome!

Avatar deserved every single technical and art award that it got, and deserved to miss out on all the rest, just like it did. A rare occasion of the Academy getting it right

tucco [2010-03-10 02:30:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, poor James... I mean: ex-wife?! Daaaamn!
Avatar may not have THE best-1st-class-one-of-its-kind-never-before-experienced-story and all, but it sure delivered (in every sense). 166 minutes of pure awesomness just asking for more!

Oscars tend to mark 9 out of 10 movies you absolutely do not need to see (ever). Out of which at least 7 will only leave you with a feeling you just wasted 90+ minutes of your precious life on some cheap bullshit.
Usually 8 out of that 10 movies are some weird creations you dont have the slightest chance to even hear about (before the oscars). And even then it is pointless, because you dont get to see it anywhere (and then there is the no-need-to-see it factor to be considered).
To make things better, every now and then there are just not enough "artistic" movies around so some nominations fall to the mainstream as well. Then there is 49% chance that the awards go to the better part of the mainstream lot (considering the planets in our solar system are aligned in the right manner at the right time in the right dimension).

Nice strip, BTW...

I wish Oscars would fall on my head.

I have mixed feelings about The Hurt Locker winning. I mean it seems like they always go for the whole psychological drama over everything.

True her's only cost like 16 million but then again only made about 19 million at the box office... where as his was over 300 million but made well over a billion and is still in theaters.
Still love your comic though

Shquiggles [2010-03-09 21:32:18 +0000 UTC]

I was rather annoyed by that. I hadn't even heard of the movie that won best picture. And I honestly thought Avatar was a rather amazing movie. Some people just have no taste, I suppose.

Pale-Blue-Wolf In reply to Shquiggles [2010-03-10 00:55:42 +0000 UTC]

Avatar was an over-used plot, with intense special effects.

Hurt Locker was a wonderfully done, gripping film.

Shquiggles In reply to Pale-Blue-Wolf [2010-03-11 07:57:05 +0000 UTC]

Over-used plot. To my knowledge, Dances With Wolves, is one of the few other movies to really do that.
But you're entitled to your opinion.

actual bomb squad men in iraq hated the hurt locker, did you hear any complaints from aliens or ex-space marines? I did like the hurt locker more though XD

Morelwen In reply to Shquiggles [2010-03-09 22:49:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha yes, because you not having heard of the other movie means every one else doesn't have taste.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shquiggles In reply to Morelwen [2010-03-11 08:06:41 +0000 UTC]

But it's understandable that I may not have heard of it. There were no commercials for it in my area. (To my knowledge.) And it only appeared on 500 screens throughput it's showing. Avatar appeared on more than 4 times that amount, on opening day, and that was for the 3D release alone. Also, it's important to note, I NEVER said it was a bad movie, I merely pointed out that I had never Heard of it until it won.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Morelwen In reply to Shquiggles [2010-03-11 08:58:14 +0000 UTC]

Saying Avatar didn't win because "Some people just have no taste" when you haven't seen the movie that won.
I'm done, I can't even muster up the strength to tell you how stupid that is.

but I'm not bummed by it not winning at all some people didn't like it and that's cool. I honeslty think it didn't NEED an oscar XDDD It's proven itself enough amirite?

Haven't seen "The Hurt Locker" although I do hope it won on its merits and not because it was about Iraq

....I really wish Up didn't win though
