Description Station Thirteen
"Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross"

Mixed media oilgraph on canvas with blood.
36"x36"

The word "pieta" has only one definition: Mary with the crucified Christ. It comes from the Latin word meaning piety.
I wanted to show Mary as I saw her. A mother whose son was just murdered.
I chose the word "Furia" the Latin word for rage.

History
The Stations of the Cross are the fourteen traditional panels
depicting the final moments of Christ's life starting with his condemnation
to death at the hands of Pilate to his crucifixion and burial in the tomb. Over
the years pilgrims would go to Jerusalem and walk the route Jesus took on his
way to the cross, stopping at moments along the way to remember, reflect and
pray. The Stations began appearing in the middle ages when pilgrims were forbidden
to enter Jeruselem when it was occupied by the Turks. They made the Stations
as a way to remember in Spirit back in their own countries. Long considered
only a Catholic tradition, they are now finding a popularity across all traditions.
These are my versions. This journey started in January of this year and the
last of the Fourteen was completed April 4th.

I think this one is simply the highlight of the whole series. Such emotion captured in her face that is furthered by the use of the oil...
Thank you for this! To me, they are incredible illustrations of my faith such as the work of Rembrandt, Rodin and Henry Ossawa Tanner!

Wow...thank you so much. Yeah, this was a really emotional shoot. Everyone involved in the shoot were close friends which gave Sylvia (Mary) the freedom to be so nakedly emotional. I was so proud of her. This is the one that seems to stop people. And it was the last one painted.

Thank you again...and be blessed...

Wow... this one just ...... the pain of Blessed Mary soars through history, from the first murder in Bible time to the still happening murders and wars... wow!

Perfect tones and contrasts in this piece... and a fantastic follow up to Forsaken. I can feel the weight of the hearts of all those who loved the man crucified before them.

The lack of texture in this one seems so very fitting as well.. adds to the sorrow, and the quiet that I imagine would have fallen over everybody at the moment they realized he was dead.

Such wrenching from the depth of grief, death, and sorrow! Truly this series is worthy of publication.

btw, i'm ing this even though my last half dozen picks haven't shown at my site. i hope it's a temporary dA thing and not something i'm having a problem with for other reasons. Still, i chose this piece without reservation.

Someone simply must submit something from this series for a DD.

I found all of your versions of The Stations of the Cross to be extrordinarily beautiful. They're so lifelike, that, at first, I thought they were pictures. This one, Pieta, is my unrivaled favorite. I can feel the rage coming from Mary in waves! Very few people can take a paint brush, and make it tell a story. You are wonderfully gifted, and it shows in every brushstroke.

Thank you...though the image itself is a photograph and the oil is the texturizing layer in this case.
