Description Still playing around with doing an image with the markers alone and without the use of any inking pens before colours. There's a lot of issues with this picture, but I have fun trying out new things. X3

I think this looks very nice without the penwork. Very light and more 'fluid' (for lack of a better word).
Very nice job! I love those purples tones you used. :3

wow this is really good! The skin is outstanding! I'd say if this is really a goal for you the only thing you need to work on is the is the hair.

You are pretty good at Semi realism :3 you should experiment with it more. And Great job doing it without outlines, i prefer not to use them, cost it makes drawing look more 3D and realistic.
He hair needs a bit more work though, it looks a bit rough and rushed, comparing to her detailed body.
Arms needs to be more thinner and feminine, the look too muscular at the moment.
I love the shading on the skin and all the colors you used, also you could've outlined the body in white( very thinly) it would've given it more 3D look. Oh and using dark shades under the eye is not a good idea, unless you want to show that the person is sick or tired. Use only light shades on the cheekbones : )

I love the purple fins on her arms, you can blend it more into the skin next time or make it see though :'D

btw I love how you do faces ^^ but why her eye lashes are brown comparing to the rest of hair? Oo I'm pretty sure its ok to outline eyes in black even if you are not using any lineart, it will define them more. Also her top lip is a bit lost, make a thin white line at the bottom of it, giving it a bit more shine and form:3

Cant think of anything else helpful at the moment....well i hope it was helpful

You have some really good points there. :3 I usually ink stuff so working without them is always going to throw me into a situation of not having any idea what I'm doing.

A lot of people have pointed out the hair looks rushed and that the eyelashes don't suit being brown. X3

Thanks so much for the pointers, hon! You have a much better experience with this stuff, so this will help me greatly next time I try it out! And it's the first good chunk of very useful crit I've got in a long time. :3

working with just markers without an outline is fun! you really get to focus on making fun shapes and colors. i really like the color of the shadows in her skin and, oddly enough, her chunky little ear. xD the full lips are so rich, i love them. keep up with the experimenting! (maybe i'll muster up the guts to post some of my experiments. @_@)

I like the usage of white in the hair. I don't really like the face, but it's alright. The fins are very pretty~ As are the scales.

I love the effect of no outlines on the face - it gives it a more natural feel. Although the eyelashes seem a bit light. The hair threw me off, because of the volume of it, but since she is a mermaid, perhaps she's underwater? Eh. The torso and tail part as well feel more natural without the lineart. The only thing I think is kinda iffy without the lineart is the fins on the arms, just because of the lack of definition. But as you said, it's experimental. But anyways, I love how the nose is. Odd, I know, but its just well done.
It's an excellent piece for it being experimental and all of the flaws.

I think it's coming out well, her skin for one looks great. Her hair's a little on the iffy side though... It might need more highlights for shape rather than line.

Forgive my critique, I thought I'd just chip in...

I've tried this a few times before too. It's real fun, and the results can be amazing. X3 I love all the purple tones in her skin, and her flowy hair. And such lucious lips! <3 Only thing that bothers me is the color of the eyelashes... I don't even understand why. It's a nice color, and it's not like it clashes with the rest of the image but... Iono, it just seems that eyelashes should be darker than that.

I have a couple questions though. (And if this is something you've answered a hundred times over already, feel free to disregard it.) I would imagine you had some kind of a rough sketch to go by. Did you make use of a light box so you could keep true to your sketch without worrying about the pencil marks? When I do lineless marker work (or any marker work for that matter), I use a fairly thick paper so the markers don't bleed, but you can't really see through to trace over a sketch... And I press too hard with my pencil when I sketch, so the pencil lines still show up in areas I use light colored markers on. XD I try to use a smaller and harder lead for sketches, but I keep losing the pencil for it. :B Anyway, that leads to my other question; do (or did) you ever have problems with pressing down too hard during the sketching stage?

Sorry if that's kinda long-winded. I find the way an artist works to be just as fascinating as the stuff they're working on. XB

Actually, what I do is erase the pencil marks until they're pretty much ghostly, but only on the area I'm working on at each point, that way I've got a reference without having to use a lightbox or anything like that. X3

I love to see your work because it proves to me that even if it's not digital, it can still look awesome. But I have a question: How do you get those white marks? Like, are they something you splatter on? I don't mind seeing them, because on some it really adds a nice effect. Just asking, and keep up the awesome work!

KeyshaKitty In reply to Mgyk [2008-02-23 23:03:23 +0000 UTC]

I just splatter some white paint over the image by flicking the paintbrush bristles. :3
