Description So I was listening to BBC news while I painted a few days back, keeping up with the Japan disaster and what have you, and I heard this story about a mother running down the street, throwing her kids into a neighbours steel house to safety, and subsequently being washed away never to be seen, and I sort of wanted to paint something depicting courage over insurmountable odds.

I was honestly never planning to submit this, it became an excersise in painting water more than anything. I modelled the entire scene in 3D, and then wanted to paint in the water, and how it would interact and slosh around the 3D environment. So you can clearly see the interaction between the 3D and the 2D.

However, my wife thinks it's one've the most beautiful pieces I've ever done, and said I should submit it as it is, with the 3D obvious, and the 2D as it is.

This is a very honest, stark painting. Combining my two skills. The 3D isn't concealed or covered up. It's simply there. Untextured. Viewable by all. The 2D water that I hand painted works around it and enables it.

So yah, stay strong Japan. ^^

A nice bright break from your usual style. Nice to know you have a broad spectrum.

Holy shit. This truly touched my heart more than it already was when I heard about Japan, and I have not yet heard of the mother and her children. The title and the art work truly fit together.
The mixture of the 3D and the 2D is quite amazing despite the 3D not being covered up, and the two work amazingly together. <3

Your wife is quite right. Wonderful job on getting that story down so well with this piece. Truly touching in ever way.

I get a lump in my throat from that kind of story. Your painting is doing a great job in getting that lump bigger.

Right on man. Looking at this piece with that story behind it just strikes me. Its such a beautiful statement for courage and what that mother did. Great physical reprsentation.
