Love this image so much. Its too bad the new comic didn't live up to the old, but the covers certainly did. You are both masters. Is there any way to get this at a higher resolution? I would really like to put it up on a wall in my house.
Thanks for the great art, just wish I could have seen more.

It is going to take some time to get this comic back to its original glory. The recipe is hidden in Dwayne Mcduffie's early work with Static. That work cannot be ignored if you want to make STATIC shine again. It is very possible to do this, and I have a feeling that it will be only a matter of time before someone puts STATIC where he is meant to be....as one of the greatest superheroes created.

This cover art is fantastic man, and as a fan of the original series, it brought tears to my eyes.

I have to ask, is there anyway that I could get this poster size??

The penciler and editor didn't let the writer of this comic have much of in put in the comic and the penciler admitted he didn't know a thing about Static Shock. The writer actually quit the comic in the earler issues. Makes me wonder was racism involved, because it sure is looking like it.

You know with the racism aside this is what destroyed the static comic,Β

1. Who's ever Idea it was to give him that ugly costume.Β

2. Not rebooting his origin story so people know who he is in these modern times.

3. Not giving him his own originalΒ villainsΒ to fight by ripping off the joker.Β

4. Putting him around an electric high tech city thus preventing Statics powers to stand out.

5. The terrible interior artwork.

6. Placing him in the future so it would be harder to have super hero team up with the other dc hero's.Β

7. The pacing of the story was garbage.

8. A missed opportunity here, because a lot of people were over looking superman and Teen Titans Β comics and choosing Static over them and they were white people.Β

As someone who was there for most of it, I don't think it was racism at all. Just sometimes people don't get along with other people. And when that happens, the end product won't be as good as you want it to be.

It seems a bit too fishy for me. Was it really so hard to just make Static like he was on the cartoon costume and all. It's like who ever was responsible for the comics cancellation did their very best to comic fail. It really seems that way. The art work was terrible. Static's costume sucked, the environment was convoluted, the enemies look like power ranger rejects. The were doing their absolute best to make it fail. Shouldn't the writer automatically have more say than any one else? It seems like common sense.

Trust me when I say nobody spends money on anything expecting or wanting it to fail. I worked with all these guys. Poor decisions may get made and whoever makes those decisions should be held accountable, absolutely. But nobody tries to do bad work.

Also, trust me when I saw that no matter how frustrated you are, I'm even more so. I put a lot of work into trying to make these covers look good. I really, really wanted Static Shock to succeed.

I don't know. You can't read peoples minds, so anything is possible. The inside artwork was just terrible no, offence. Didn't like much effort was put into it. The first Static cover looked alright, but the costume is just terrible. His old costume was more unique And stood out from the other teen super heroes. This comic could have really been good & could have sold well, because people was actually picking the static comic over big name titles like Superman, and Teen Titans, there is almost no excuse for the comic to fail so early when it had a decent start. Makes no since at all. A true black super hero who isn't stealing white super hero's identity like Nick Fury, and it get's ruined. It steal feels fishy.

It's all good, you are of course welcome to your opinion. I don't take offense to you not liking the interiors, it wasn't my artwork. All I can say is that lots of hard work went into the book, and we all wanted for it to be good. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way. It's not easy to get a property w/ black protagonists out there, and even when you do the chips are stacked against you. Just ask George Lucas.

I agree, the comic could/should have been been good, and could/should have sold well.

We'll get there eventually.

TheEzekiel300 In reply to KharyRandolph [2012-04-22 01:01:57 +0000 UTC]

A lot of folks was picking it over the big titles. I just mean wow. If it was anything like the show or even just adapted elements from the show it would have been done well. I mean just giving him his something a little closer to his classic costume could have helped. Yeah, Superman's costume has changed a great deal, but it still has the basic enough features that make it a superman costume. Static's just doesn't. I just have my eyes itching to see him join the teen titans or something.

One more question. Why didn't you guys just let the writer handle it? I heard that's the reason why he left early because I quote him saying that he knew for a fact that, "it was going to be a turd sand which." He even said someone laughed at him when he said that he believed Virgil should act like teenager and hang around other teens. I am not even sure if Static's world even took place in the DC world because it looks futuristic.

KharyRandolph In reply to TheEzekiel300 [2012-04-24 05:59:23 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure I already have. What happened? People made decisions that other people didn't like. The book didn't catch on as a result. I already said this.

You don't like the costume? It was designed by Scott McDaniel and Jim Lee. Talk to them.

"Why didn't you guys just let the writer handle it"? It's not "you guys." I was not involved in that. I drew the covers. That is between the writer, the artist and DC editorial. No matter what, everyone has to make DC happy. That's the way things work. You can hear the viewpoints of both McDaniel and Rozum very clearly if you are willing to Google it. Nothing I can say can give you any more insight than from the horse's mouth.

The flaw with your belief in some sinister racist plot to destroy Static Shock doesn't hold up for a couple of reasons. 1) the editor is black. 2) I'm black. 3) My inker, LeBeau Underwood, is black. 4) The previous cover artists, Chris Brunner & Keron Grant, are black. 5) John Rozum has previous experience writing black characters for Milestone. 6) Scott McDaniel's previous and very long art pedigree speaks for itself.

Bottom line, everyone involved wanted the book to be good. Static is a great character. He deserves to have a great book. But intent and delivery are two different things. It takes a lot of different pieces to come together perfectly to make a good book.

LOTS of things could/should have been done better.

P.S. Static has made a cameo in current issues of Teen Titans. Maybe he'll have a home there, who knows.

So, take that as you will. I have comics to draw.

When I saw this cover a few weeks ago, it hit me hard. I was 14 when the books were announced. I still have the Va Pilot article with the first sketches and the interview with Mr. Dingle. I read the Milestone books when I could find them. Hardware. Blood Syndicate. Icon.

Static.

Static broke out, and rightfully so because he offered something different. Heck, the entire Milestone line brought out a world of comics that were entertaining with something to say instead of just battering our heads with a morality lesson like a lot of books did. Finally, books where the lead Black character wasn't an ex-con, an African prince or princess, or a hellborne demon with some unearthly voodoo spellcasting. They were relatable, and they were real, if not in flesh and bone, then on the printed page and, for 52 glorious episodes, on Saturday mornings.

I think the Milestone books were the reason I wanted to pursue creating my own comics, my own characters, my own voice. I was just lucky I told Mr. McDuffie that while he was still with us. I look at how he and so many others kept Milestone's legacy alive over the years in other media, and I look at them all with a sense of pride. Proof that in the great cosmic sense of comic book mythmaking, we exist. We may be shrouded in shadows most of the time, but when we're out in the light, it's a beautiful thing.

I look at this cover, and I see that you feel this too. You see the present but don't ignore the past, and every Milestone fan out there recognizes that the final issue of Static Shock is AN end, not THE end. He'll be back one day, but time goes on and the volatility of the market and the unspoken bigotry of the direct comic shop marketplace still exist.

You have made a very impactful cover, Khary. I probably talked way too much here (I have a sickening need to do that from time to time). Much success to you and your colleagues in the months and years ahead.

Man, you are much better with words than I am, haha. Thank you. But yeah, you pretty much hit it on the head. I didn't get to have much interaction w/ the interior guys for the book, but speaking for me and Emilio, we were really passionate about giving Static the kind of iconic treatment he deserves. We wanted him to be DC's Spider-man, and to be able to stand next to DC's other AAA superheroes. As a matter of fact, the old "Spider-Man No More" Romita cover was a big inspiration on this cover.

Ah well.
