You should increase the angle on the trident and blur it around the edges near the dude. Otherwise they don't connect.

Either way, the point is that they don't connect. I'm not being harsh, I'm offering constructive criticism. It's very satisfying to look at the image and think the trident is poking out of the dude, but the way the guy is blurred disconnects the two. The image would be much sinister and a thousand times more satisfying if it felt like the two were connected. The viewer would be able to almost "hear" that trident going "thump" into his chest.
It's a very small thing, and a credit to the quality of the image that I could find such a tiny thing to critique.

The center prong of the trident looks like there is a thin like of metal cut out from under the base. Is that supposed to be something that I am not getting?

Actually, that is FAIL on my part. In my original description to another artist who conceived the character design for me, the head of the trident was going to be a blivet (one of those optical illusions where a fork has to two square tines with three round prongs on the end). He didn't understand me properly ('cos his English is not so good), and that got messed up in the subsequent design.
But kudos to you for noticing how much that didn't work.

This is my own superheroine character, Beach Babe, and she's fighting crime and the forces of evil; all that usual superhero stuff. And this dude works for her arch-nemesis.
Two advantages to her crimefighting outfit; 1) She'll never get hot and sweaty when fighting crime; 2) It acts as a good "distraction" during combat.
