Your reference sheets are just awesome ! And very helpful

And I just have one question about this one : It's a right-handed character pose ? I ask because I've got a character who use a bow but he is left-handed
(english isn't my birth language, hope you understand what I wrote)

A bit late, but since I stumbled upon your question, I might as well answer it. A right-handed person (who actually has the dominant eye the right one) holds the bow in their left hand; a left-handed person (they have their left eye as a dominant one) holds the bow in their right hand; there are also those weird ones, who are right-handed  but left eye dominant who may end up shooting like a lefty, because their aim is better that way. (And I assume there may be lefties with the right eye dominant, but I've never met one so far).

This is really great, but, as someone who's done archery for several years... Your thumb should be resting at your jawline, resting against it/touching it. This stabilizes your hand and holds the arrow true to angle of where you're looking. You should also be standing straight and never bring your head to meet the string/arrow, bring it to you. So that first one would likely be a very poor shot. The second has the hand up too high on the face. :/ I'm not meaning to nitpick, and I know it comes off that way. As another said, it doesn't matter much in shows/comics, but it's poor form and possibly dangerous in real life.

I noticed another thing. Isn't the hand that's gripping the bow supposed to be a bit more relaxed.

I just finished an archery camp where the instructor kept nagging at me for gripping my bow to much

RivenWren In reply to BLITZandBLAZE [2016-07-21 16:27:52 +0000 UTC]

It's not so much the grip, but you shouldn't hold your arm that extended because the string can come back and snap you /really/ good (and by that, I mean that sucker will make you bleed).

Happy to help. I just hope I didn't insult Kibbitzer. I absolutely adore Kibbitzer's references and I'd love to be a Patreon supporter someday.

I doubt that, you are merely giving advice and describe what your experiences have taught you.
After all, those are references for an anatomy study, we're all here for learning so your comment is at the right spot.

Have a nice day ~

tank you, they are really good, but one thing is wrong: the picture at the top is too dangerus to shoot like this (okay it looks cool and they do so in films)
this may be okay for male archers, female archers would hurt themself pretty bad shooting like this.
most archers touch the string with their nose, they can't cut off their nose or ears like this. (yes, happend)
female archers also have to bend their arm a little, or they will hit their breast with the string (and ouh it hurts, i was wearing a protector, a shirt and a bra and it still bled like hell, i had to go to hospital).
most safe it is to have the string touch your nose, your chin and as a female your breast on the opposite of the arm drawing.
oh ans while this goes for female, i have a lot of male friends wearing breast-protection too, because of their muscles.

I'm not sure but maybe it's the shot of the point of view? Like the subject is seen from above? so it seems that the bow is like put horizontally.. But I may be wrong x'

Aquafolie In reply to nuttynachos [2016-06-28 01:16:23 +0000 UTC]

You are wrong, it's not a matter of point of view but rather 'technique', position.
Tho I don't think it's really that much of an issue; like OP said, a lot of people shoot like this in movies, only people who actually do archery will know that shooting like this isn't ideal (tho you won't hurt yourself if you have a beginner bow/or if the string isn't very tight - but your arrow won't go very far either).
And I think it's okay since this is a drawing reference sheet and no an archery tutorial. I think OP focuses too much on the details. Especially since drawing archer is so hard (well at least I find it tough)

Drita-daidai In reply to Aquafolie [2016-06-28 11:08:47 +0000 UTC]

An archer here. You only can touch your nose and lips with the string in the olympic modality, but with traditional bows (like the one in the sketch) you place the string next to your cheek.
And yes, the first drawing in real life would be incorrect and dangeros for your arm and your back, but I understand that drawing it is difficult.

Nice poses though. I like them anyways

Nijisuu In reply to BlueWildfire9 [2016-06-25 10:08:17 +0000 UTC]

actually with enough practice its possible to shoot arrows like that that hit, but i can't say how effective it is, cause i can't do it myself (yet) hahahaha
However the arm should be turned so that the arrow is on top and not below haha, same for the draw hand

BlueWildfire9 In reply to Nijisuu [2016-06-25 10:30:11 +0000 UTC]

Everything is possible with enough practise. As my master says, «The arrow will go wherever it wants. You can... lead it a bit». Anyways, there are lots of types of bows, and the technique isn't exactly the same for each one...
