A long way from the rough sketch, but it needs coloring and some sort of background. Nel's pose is pretty boring but this was more of an attempt to get the "feel" of her rather than draw an action shot.I love Nel as a little girl. She's too adorable and the voiceover artist is *perfect* for her!
Done on 300 Series Strathmore sketch paper
Inked using Staedtler permanent liners 01, 03, 05 and 07
Just a touch of Photoshop CS used for cleanup.

Earlier I was trying to think of a design of a skull as a helmet and I think you nailed it better than any of my ideas. Excellent control over the line quality, she's very lovely.

Thank you so much, but the idea isn't mine. That honor goes to Kubo Tite, the manga artist of Bleach. Nel is an AWESOME character as a little girl, probably my favorite next to Renji, and I can't wait to see the anime version of her as an adult!

What Nel is is complicated...but if you like the skull-thing, you should check out Bleach. It starts off kind-of slow (and reminded me of YuYu Hakusho) but after the character introduction phase it really starts to move. There's more characters with skull-masks than you can shake a stick at!

That was one of the first episodes...the little boy "possessing" the bird was Shiba? Shoba?? Something like that.
