As part of the Girls Make Games girlsmakegames.com/ campaign I worked with, which was a summer camp dedicated to getting young girls into gaming, the woman in charge of the program asked me to illustrate how working with the camp felt for me, PERSONALLY. This is what I came up with!There was honestly just something magical about watching girls design something that truly spoke to them. They were so excited, and so passionate that I couldn't help but be moved, even though there were a LOT of unicorns.

This really encapsulates the emotion of and feeling of world building in game design personally. There really isn't anything quite like making a world come to life right before your very eyes.
This illustration is very cool looking, very mystical. I love all the colors and textures in it, it feels like something out of a storybook.

Though, it is a bit stereotypical to design girls games with pinkish and cute stuff.
Sure they designed it themselves but I guess it was just because they were influenced by stereotypical media.

The girls I worked with were very progressive, and I gave them some serious kudos for their design decisions in certain instances. They were all 9, so on the young end of the other girls there.
One girl wanted a horror story with dark moody colors, and the other girls wanted something upbeat and adorable, so they compromised together for a dream world that went from happy to dark in a nightmare realm.
When we were discussing the main character, the girls all agreed that she should be a little darker in skin tone, and have black hair, because they felt that there were too many blond characters in video games. They all agreed it HAD to be a girl, too. Finally, when I asked what the girl's outfit should be, one girl offered "Let's just avoid dresses, because that's sort of sexist" with calls of agreement from the other girls. which I found so refreshing hearing a REALLY young girl able to stand up against that. I don't think I had even heard that word until I was a teenager or adult.
Mostly just defending their decisions, because while it's stereotypical if you make something pinkish BECAUSE IT'S FOR GIRLS these ladies made active decisions on why they wanted something, and deciding you like pink, and you being a girl has nothing to do with it, is A-OK.
