Old! A children's book illustration from last year. This is the last page of my 10-pages picture book. I had to come up with a short, simple (and heartwarming and educational and all that sweet stuff) but effective plot, write down the text in rhymes (), draw the whole storyboard and complete two (make it almost-three, as one had to be a double splash page) illustrations. This was hard beyond my expectations!
First off, I'm not too familiar with stylization, especially the cutesy type. Then, the hardest thing in general was to come up with something a kid would be fascinated with, both on the writing part and on the visual aspect. I'm afraid thinking like a kid is not so easy anymore. I was looking for something not too down-on-earth, with some powerful fantasy elements that don't really need to be explained. Potentially freaky

The ending result was a story about a vain raven that snatches away the sun light every morning to keep his plumage gorgeous. Then his feathers start to turn grey and dull and his usual sunbaths only seem to make it worse...
It's a story about how learning to share over being greedy will make life more “colorful”. It is also meant to explain how color works in physics and what the color black really is.
… I'm embarrassed c:

Hi, sorry for my late reply. I'm currently super busy with a huge project - as you can see I haven't updated my gallery here in almost ten months. I'll make sure to let everyone know when I'm open for commissions
For any questions, my e-mail address is on my main page, in the ID section. Thank you for your interest!

your techniques are expanding in ways i've never thought possible. Keep going!

You're right, thinking like a kid is too hard. But if it helps, i think kids like colorful, patchwork things, especially if they evoke grand scales of massiveness. Kids like whacky complications too, especially the kinds that they can visually explore..!

Thank you!
Ahah I hadn't thought it possible either, but it's all about breaking the habit and trying to get the right perspective. The expansion of our techniques is not limited if we don't allow it to be That being said, I still don't like the field of children's illustration as much as others and I still need a lot of practice to really get the core, but trying sure taught me stuff I couldn't have experimented otherwise!
So I definitely recommend trying things that feel very alien and different from your usual tastes

Thanks! I would have written the text too, but it wouldn't make sense in Italian, and I can't translate it without adapting the rhymes xD
I'm glad you like this style - I will experiment with it more when practicing stylization

Thanks! :3 I really loathe this thing now but trying something so different from my usual was fun - I'll definitely try again in the future.
