Finally finished! -> HERE

A painting test I started about a month ago. I got stuck. I know some anatomy needs fixing but I just wanted to focus on the general look here.
I needed to start with something to understand what direction I'd like to take: as expected, it looks too classical. I'm looking for something more painterly, rough, with an impressionistic feel. I want to be able to play with basic shapes. I need to experiment and find a more personal voice, but time is running out for this piece.
...at least now I have a clearer idea of what I'm trying to achieve, what to keep and what to throw away

I appreciate any feedback you can provide

Just a little more work on the tree and the lower left side of the pic and it's perfect. Love the light and the colors.

I've been working on this picture for a while now and I should be able to post the final version relatively soon. I really hope it will show some improvement.

You know how it is...Some pictures take longer than others. I think it looks great the way it is!
Some pictures are meant to be totally refined/rendered images...while others are meant to be very loose expressions of an idea.

Artists always want to improve upon their base ideas/concepts, in order to show "improvement", but improvement will come as long as you keep creating.
In my opinion, "improvement" is just as subjective as "style". You may think something is greatly improved upon, while others will think that its "cool".
For what its worth, I think this is already a spectacular piece of art, with tons of expressive energy and emotion. Very beautiful work...keep making art!

Great insight
My goal is to find a good balance of well rendered and loose/painterly - I will keep creating and practicing to achieve a style I really feel comfortable with.
And thank you!

This is stunning, I sincerely love everything about it : the colorscheme, the digital technic (mix of precise and less precise elements), the bold strokes...
Awesome !

Thank you! This means a lot I'm glad you like the mix of clean parts and less precise elements - it's exactly what I was trying to achieve with this. I'll experiment some more and hope I'll achieve a satisfactory final result!

I love how you combined the elements around her head, it really fits the creation concept and everything blends in soooo well <33

Also the different kind of brushes you used already make it not looking too classical, in my opinion :3c

And good to hear that! I'm going to make it even more painterly. I hope to be able to dish out something good for the exam

For some reason, when it's being used as your display pic, it doesn't quite have the same punch as it does when i'm looking at it now. Now i'm like WHOA. It's like when you're looking at a mountain in a google image somewhere and it's like you go "ok, nice mountain maybe its an ice mountain", but when you're IRL standing in some valley with an ice mountain rearing in front of you like a majesty creature, you're like "no sht, i need this! i need this with me in the foreground on my facebook wall!"
The more i magnify it, the better it gets. damn : D

Oh, I'm flattered you feel that way Thank you so much!
This thing is going to be my guinea pig until I find a more interesting and painterly solution. It'll probably change a lot, so I thought I'd put this not-too-risky moment of the style development process here.

I wasn't satisfied with the style, but I'll have to pick it up again soon and finish it... I'm feeling a lot more motivated now

Finickii [2014-01-31 19:24:36 +0000 UTC]

The colors are gorgeous. The contrast with warm yellows and oranges against the cooler blues and whites is very striking. (and what are those things on her neck? scales? feathers? I like them!)

It almost looks like you got a background taking shape behind her, with the blue against white. A faded waterfall, perhaps?

Actually, have you heard of Julie Dillon? She uses a lot of abstract shapes and colors in her work to create a painterly effect. I highly recommend her gallery for inspiration.

Thank you! I'm feeling a lot more motivated to pick this up again and experiment some more

Those things on her neck are feathers - though I did think of painting scales at some point. I'm going to try to make them look softer in the final render. Everything on the right side of the image will be taking animal shapes or reference animal features - flora on the left, fauna on the right, that is my plan. I'd like to make these elements look rough, even abstract (they're her creations, after all), while rendering the focus (face and tree) more accurate, realistic and polished. I don't know how to make it work, but I'm trying new solutions and looking for inspiring galleries.
Thank you so much for mentioning Julie Dillon's gallery - it's wonderful and it's definitely going to be a useful inspiration!

Ooh! I can't wait to see this done.

I'm a huge sucker for realistic painting mixed with abstract elements. There's just something about that contrast that snags my attention every time.
