Cameron wrote Avatar in 1993 before Airbender came in 2005, but Cameron didn't film Avatar right away as he put the script in a drawer until technology developes. He filmed Avatar in 2006 till 2009. He came first.

I though AVATAR was amazing the first few times I saw it, but nothing beats ATLA by a longshot.

I love it! It does happen all the friggin time! But I agree, James Cameron's Avatar was pretty awesome. Just not as awesome as Avatar: The Last Airbender series is ^_^

peirrin [2010-01-06 02:59:30 +0000 UTC]

I think they were trying to capitalize on ATLA's popularity, and this is why they stole the name, AND FONT!

(Okay, so not really, but coming up with lame conspiracy theories is a hobby.)

KimchiCrusader In reply to peirrin [2010-01-07 02:45:48 +0000 UTC]

yeah @_@ It's really weird to me...but regardless, I saw the movie and loved it a lot. The naming is just so unfortunate! (Also, they keep trying to market Cameron's movie to kids, but with all the violence/PG13 rating I don't understand why).

peirrin In reply to KimchiCrusader [2010-01-12 22:11:50 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I've seen the movie now too.

Scale of 0-5, it rates a 3ish.
Pretty cool, awesome visuals as advertised (Even though I saw it in regular as opposed to 3-D)
But it suffered from lack of real character development, pacing, and being cliche. But, still, fun

Haha, I was wondering where I'll find this kind of fanart...
Actually I like both. And no, don't have to feel like a traitor if you like the movie Avatar and the ATLA. Besides, Avatar has a lot of meaning.
Not taking sides or anything, just ranting.
I still wonder about the font of the title though... They're kinda similar, other than that, I have no problem whatsoever.

TheHungeredPenguin [2009-12-31 06:50:23 +0000 UTC]

I remember first hearing about Cameron's Avatar...and I remember reading about astronauts in space in the future. However I had just seen that movie with the farmer dad-turned astronaut, and thought this was similar, and couldn't get out of my mind thinking "This movie is going to be so GAY"

Saw the trailer and...was sorely mistaken. Saw the movie opening night and it was quite incredible. Granted, the story wasn't so great, however seeing it a second time, the movie really couldn't have worked another way. The message he sent to us has been drilled into our heads because we never really *get* the story. So...yeah haha.

Even if some people really hate it, everyone at least should see it once in three-d, it's absolutely spectacular visually (even though I'm still in awe with ATLA...you gotta give some respect for the artists on this movie homg..)

And, the papyrus thing didn't bother me since it's a universally used font. Avatar TLA doesn't own it, in fact, I don't believe people associated the two until fan fiction writers and artists started putting the two together.

"So who plays Ang?"

"...NO RYAN! THE OTHERRRRRR AVATAR..."

I'm like, HUH-WAAAAAAAT?! lol

I don't know what's worse, that there's going to be an A:TLA movie at all or that this movie kind of stole its thunder. :/

JellieMonkeh [2009-12-24 14:36:33 +0000 UTC]

He named it Avatar for obvious reasons, but I do wish he had come up with another name. True the concept and filming were of "Avatar" were in progress with the tv show came out, but I doubt they had actually settled on a name by then. What's wrong with calling it Pandora? Oh well, If AtLA didn't rename their movie we would continue to have this confusion when AtLA came out.

Nice comic btw my dear . I hope classes are going well and Sarit isn't making good on his killing and ass kicking threats.

AtLA is now just called TLA on movie sites/google. I believe Cameron decided on the name a couple of years ago - before ATLA became popular

This has happened to me about 12 times so far.
(The worst was when it happened with an "ATLA fan" DX)
James Cameron needs to get off his high horse and deflate his head. Then maybe I'll go see his movie. Maybe.
(When it comes to the $2 theater.)

*MUCH AGREEMENT*
TOTES TEH STORY OF WOT HAPPENED TO MEH!

When I went to SDCC 2009, everyone kept going on about how there was going to be a sneak preview of the Avatar film and a bunch of Avatards like me were all " OHEMGEE NO WAI!!" and flocked to the showing only to see that it was CAMERON
.

I mean no offense, but I personally feel rather tired of people complaining about the movies' name. The term "avatar" existed a LONG time before the television series. It does fit the movie and the way the human race perceive themselves in it perfectly.

I saw it and it wasn't that good. BUT SERIOUSLY. They could have easily named it something else. Like "Na'vi" or something.
