Description Professional assassin Chev Chelios learns his rival has injected him with a poison that

will kill him if his heart rate drops. Hi this is KingJames92 your guide to movies.

Welcome to a day in which I would like to simply call it Neveldine/Taylor day. Which is a

day in honor of the new Ghost Rider film that came out today, mostly for it's two

directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Now before we talk about the new movie which I

am going to be talking about tomorrow night, I just want to take a look back of their

other films they have made (No I am not reviewing Jonah Hex or Pathology because they

weren't the ones that directed it just wrote it). My first review is a movie from 2006

that really brought some new things in the action genre and that is the Jason Statham

movie Crank. Now before I start this review, I just want to say that this movie is their

best movie by far in their filmography. Why? Well you are going to find out now. Now

without wasting anymore time, let's start the day with reviewing Crank. The story in

Crank is very unique for a modern day action film. True it does kind of mixes elements

from other movies, but for the most part the story is told very well and there's lots of

intrigue and deception going on with the story, along with a lot of double cross going on

with the plot as well. I think the best way to describe the plot in this movie it's like

Speed but a whole new different twist on it. Think of it without the bus, without Sandra

Bullock and Keanu Reeves, and without a terrorist scheme by Dennis Hopper, and it also

has the sort of crime feeling mixed in with the story as well and that can lead to some

good dramatic moments the movie has in the film. So with the story mixing in all kinds of

different genres, it works very well and it holds you interest from the crazy beginning

all the way to the somewhat sad ending. What also makes the story go well are the

characters. The characters for the most part are good. With each of them having their own

characteristics and development to make them very interesting characters. True their are

some bland and weak characters, but for the most part you do have yourself really feeling

for the characters and want them to succeed. And to go along with the characters being

good you have to have good acting to go along with. And Crank delivers just that. Jason

Statham does a great job in this movie and I have to say this has to be one of his best

performances of his career. Not only because he is playing himself most of the time, but

he has a lot of anger and emotion that he puts into the film and puts a lot of effort and

energy into this role and he does it greatly. But what I think makes him so great is the

fact that he has a lot of funny things to say in this film as well but more on that

later. The rest of acting in this film is good. Efren Ramirez does a good job in the film

of playing Kaylo Chev Chelios's (Jason Statham's character) friend and somewhat trusted

companion. Although I feel that he is a tad underused and really doesn't do too much

throughout the film. The only thing that he really did to help Chelios (Statham) was to

delay his attack on Vernoa's (the main antagonist of the story) brother that is pretty

much it. But he still did a good job and at the end of it I felt very bad for him but I

won't ruin it for you. Speaking of Verona, Jose Pablo Cantillo who plays the main

antagonist of the film does do a good job. He is not only very crazy in his role, he also

can be quite intimidating sometimes and really can be a problem for Chev (Statham) in the

movie as well. And he does a good job of really playing that sort of "wanna be" gangster

vibe into his role as well and this guy would later go on to play a role in Disturbia

which is pretty cool to find out though. Dwight Yoakam in the movie plays Chev Chelios's

doctor, Dr. Miles. Yoakam does a do a good job of trying to help Chelios out in his

crisis he is dealing with and tells him what to get and what to do to ease the pain and

Yoakam also performs a rather funny performance as well. The action scenes in the movie

are good but I should mention something about the action in this movie for a minute. This

is not your straight up in your face action movie because Chelios doesn't really get his

revenge on the people that were responsible of poisoning him until the final act of the

movie, before that Chelios has to move around as much as he can to keep his heart rate up

so he can get the revenge he is dying for. This is more of a suspenseful action movie for

the most part. He does get into some fights here and there but for the most part he is

just trying to move as much as he can to keep his adrenaline up so he can get some sort

of cure to his drug he has been poisoned by. But these types of action scenes I have

mention are really good and can be quite suspenseful and nerve-racking at the same time

however and that can lead to a lot of thrilling and great suspense scenes the film has.

Before I go on, I would like to know does anybody listen to Linkin Park? Because the lead

singer of Linkin Park Chester Bennington makes a cameo appearance in this movie. I know

it's awesome to see him in a movie and he does make a very memorable cameo appearance in

the movie however. Now I am talking about a part of the movie people who haven't seen it

well be surprised about. And that is the humor, yes there is humor in this movie. And I

am happy to say it but the humor in excellent in this movie. When there is not action

going on in the movie, there is humor lots of it as a matter of fact. It's good and made

me laugh pretty darn hard throughout many parts of the movie. One of my favorite scenes

in the movie is during the second act when Chelios (Statham) stole a police motorcycle

while driving, his heart rate is going down so then he decides to stand up while the

cycle is in motion we then get to see a picture of his behind. I know that sounds

juvenile, but it's actually very humorous and anyone can laugh to that scene there's

nothing wrong about that scene at all. This scene along with other scene makes for a

movie that is not only suspenseful and filled with adrenaline, but it also has a lot of

great humor to go along with it as well. So far all I've been saying about Crank is

nothing but nice things, but there are only two flaws in the movie that I want to talk

about. So the nice stuff is going away for a little bit but we will get back to that

later. So the first flaw that I have with the movie is that certain scenes and dialogues

in the film I got lost by and didn't really know what it meant. Like a sound scene

involving Chelios and his Kaylo and a very odd scene towards the third act as well. These

scenes made no sense to me and they would have been off that having those scenes in the

movie. But that flaw can be easily forgiven because this was Neveldine/Taylor first time

at directing so they probably had some problems with certain scenes in the movie. But one

problem in the movie the biggest, biggest problem that I can't forgiven them by is Eve

Chev Chelios's girlfriend. God, I hate her, I hate her so much. Now it's the fault of

actress Amy Smart in which she does a fine job in her role. Its just her character I

cannot stand. One thing she is stupid, narcisttic, and just a compete and total bitch!

Like there is one scene for example when Chev Chelios (Statham) is telling Eve (Smart)

who he really is and what his job is for a living. After he tells her everything about

his job, do you know what she does? She just laughs at him! Well some girlfriend you are

Eve, your lucky that he didn't dump your ass a long time ago. But it gets better, Chev

(Statham) then tells Eve (Smart) that they can get away from here and go to someplace

else. You what she said after he told her that? She said to him "You are so weird". Why

thank you Eve! Just when he told you what his job is, you then laugh at him and then when

he tells you that you can get away from here with him you say that he is weird. Oh (fill

in the blank) you Eve! (fill in the blank) you! That is one of my stupid things she does

throughout the movie. The only two things she did throughout the entire film was Chev

giving it to her in Chinatown and when she gave it back to him when he was driving. But

before that scene happened in Chinatown, she probably knows that he is not in good shape.

You know what that female dog did? She freaking hits him in face and then after that she

asks him is he's alright and that she was sorry. Boy, oh boy girl you are about a useless

as a toothpick. So her character pisses me off to no end and she is just a terrible,

terrible character. But with the problems that I had with the film, I just want to close

out this review by saying a good thing about this movie. And that is the certain scenes

that are shot up close. They are very interesting and adds a lot into the movie. Like in

many scenes, we see Chelios's heart either pumping fast or slowing down because of the

adrenaline it's not getting for it to move the certain speed it should be going. And the

camera shots are really good and very unique for a action film. Like how certain shots

are shot by a angle or by a entirely different shot. This makes for a very unique

experience and really adds the originality this movie has. So in the end Crank is a great

movie. With a good story, good acting, great suspenseful and intense action scenes, great

humor, and good special effects in which I forgot to mention that there is little CG in

the film which makes for a sort of realistic experience if what would happen if someone

acted like this. It makes for a unique and entertaining action movie. If you want

something new out of your action movies. Than I highly recommended Crank, just don't show

it your kids when you are watching it. But still, the best one Neveldine/Taylor has made

but we will talk more of that later on. This was KingJames92 your guide to movies. See

you later!

Verdict: Full Price

Stick around because a little later I am going to be reviewing on what I thought of the

sequel to Crank. Crank 2: High Voltage stick around.
