Description

Whew!  It's finally done...I can breathe a sigh of relief.  Wish I had a time machine so I could show 1995 me that this is possible.  Like I said in the work in progress posts (kingofsoul81.deviantart.com/ga… , this was a ridiculous idea.  But overall it was a great learning experience.  Plus I've got a whole new appreciation for all woodcuts or engravings now.  Especially ones dating back 500 years like this.

In case you aren't familiar already, German artist Albrecht Durer did a series of 15 woodcuts based on the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelations.  The original image was released in 1498.  Check out all of his work if you're not familiar.  It will amaze you to say the least.

Thank you very much. Durer is one of my biggest heroes. This might sound stupid, but how big is he there in his homeland? I've never had the opportunity to ask someone from Germany.

Szigeti In reply to KingOfSoul81 [2015-03-03 09:03:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, as the knowledge of the classic artists and their work dwindles worldwide, he is still an artist which is mentioned in the schoolbooks. So you could say he is still big in Germany. I personally love his work.

The general public in the United States seem to know nothing of his work.  Whether it's this piece, the rabbit, or the praying hands, most people here have no idea who he is.  And that saddens me more than you could believe!  I've always assumed the German public would have a better understanding of his work.

I love him to, man.  The dude was a genius!!  He helped invent printed illustrations, really.

My god this is so impressing! Insane amount of details... When you drew this, did you ever had the feeling it's never gonna get ready?

I get that this-is-never-gonna-get-finished-why-did-i-started-it-feeling quite often...

But this is a truly wonderful piece of art, love it.

Somehow the best ideas always make for the most aggravating and rewarding projects....if that makes any sense at all.  I guess I like to test my sanity   Thank you very much, Albrect Durer is one of my biggest influences.

That makes perfect sense.

I checked him out too, his engravings are just... unbelievable.

KingOfSoul81 In reply to jenninn [2014-07-11 05:03:51 +0000 UTC]

I think Durer might be one of the greatest.  Gustave Dore may have him beat a little bit....it's close.

Yeah, there's magic on old masters paintings. I also have a thing for the Bible-related (mainly Book of Revelation) art.

Maybe Durer had a giant mole too!  We don't know for sure....

Yeah!!  You finished it!  Truly an awesome achievement.  I just found up a 1907 book on Durer in a thrift store...473 plates!  A little water-damaged, but it was only $10!  So I'll be studying works like this...but to reproduce one...great, just great.
