Description A little while back I saw an article about Peter Capaldi (the newest actor to play the Doctor, for those not in the know) and some of the Doctor Who fan art he'd submitted to a fanzine back when he was a teenager.  One piece in particular was a striking depicting of the TARDIS amongst the craggy and unwelcoming rocks of an alien world:

Bleeding Cool: Peter Capaldi's Doctor Who fanart from 1976

It was such a striking composition that I wanted to see what it'd look like in colour, and took a stab at fleshing it out with today's modern artistic technology.

The cliffs outlines, carefully reproduced from the original were rendered with photographed textures, whilst the TARDIS itself was inserted from one of the photos taken of it during filming in Trafalgar Square for last year's excellent 50th Anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.  The TARDIS had to be heavily modified to suit the setting, removing the crane hook, swapping the doors from the side to the front, and making it appear to be lit up.

Finally, I took a bit of artistic licence with the lighting... it's stronger that what Capaldi depicted, but I wanted to take the opportunity to depict something rather alien in landscape.  I imagine Capaldi's intention was to depict a somewhat windswept and gloomy (but not nighttime) scene... possibly evoking some of the imagery of Gallifrey's Death Zone.
