If a fool or lunatic summons Azathoth, he arrives with at least one piper to lull him, but, sooner or later, will start expanding outwards. In all cases, the amorpheous blight was still expanding when it was dispelled.
Nothing can be gained by summoning, save insanity. For that reason, AlHazred would not give his sigil. He also would not disclose the Nng formula, which, tho promising immortality, has horrendous consequences, should one err in so much as one syllable.

I am wondering whether all the stories are exaggerated. It sounds like some anti-Great Old One propaganda. We know for sure that Keziah Mason made a pact with Azathoth and presumably stood before Him. Β She was definitely sane afterward and was gifted with great powers.

According to Chaosium and TSR, viewing a mythos god or minion, reading a mythos book,...Β may result in a decided sanity drain. Such does NOt necessarily result in nonfunctional idiocy - madness, but perhaps in alignment reversal. Cult masters already totally insane, await the insanity and alignment reversal of a recruit before entrusting said person with cult secrets.
It is my sincere doubt that Azathoth even knows he is worshipped.
My chaosium manual even stated at the top of a list of spells, that said spells can cause alignment reversal and turn the investigator into a worshipper of the very god he was trying to frustrate (some spells involve murder & even cannibalism).

I heard of this alignment reversal but I do not agree it is by any means is equivalent or close to sanity loss from medical perspective. These people are evil or amoral but nothing more. Just like vast majority of serial killers who were not found insane during their trial just took pleasure and satisfaction from their actions. My personal theory is that Azathoth and his like are not conscious being but they have subconscoious mind. Nyarlathotep might work as their consciousness, since he was called their soul and messenger. Most if not all secret cults worship Nyarlathotep in some form, even though he claims only to do his masters' will. Another option is that Azathoth is not mindless at all, just for us humans he seems so because his mind is too incomprehensible and abstract

Blind, mindless, and only brings insanity to those foolish enough to those who summon it.
Will grow nonstop after summoning, from 15' in diameter until dispelled. Process is slowed by one or more attendants who play pipes.

I personally have doubts if aΒ sight of this creature brings the only insanity to those who summon it. While it is said so by many of Lovecraft's characters, these often seem extremely cowardly people to me. More than once those guys, allegedly "men of science" go as far to destroy priceless archeological finds simply because their scary nature or contradiction to established world view.
There is at least one character, witch Keziah Mason mentioned to have been before throne of Azathoth without any damage to her sanity.

Keziah Mason may have insane in a way . Alignment reversal. Chaosium delineates various spells (a few requiring human sacrifice and even cannibalism) and warns that usage of these can bring on alignment reversal: aiding mythos beings rather than combating them.

either azathoth or yog sothoth could be equally powerful too, now if azathoth wakes up the universe will end in the most spectacular manner i think, all the galaxies turn into chaos as azathoth destroys everything with a arsenal of alien superpowers.
