Bellasandra was supposed to be the soft antagonist, or even rival in the story. She lost her co-captain and mate during the mission to retrieve the main character and treated him like worthless trash that cost too much to bring into the fold. The turn around scene was when Reiji gave into the rage in his heart and absolutely slaughtered an opposing army practically singlehandedly and defying orders to do it. She defends him from court marshal, finally accepts him as co-captain, and even goes so far as to select him as alpha male and mate. Later, it doesn't work out between them when Reiji learns she doesn't really have feelings for him, she's only with him because he's the strongest and wants to produce powerful offspring. Bellasandra was supposed to be the trigger that makes the Main Character realize he wants more in life than just strength.
