Drew it again! This is the third and probably the final time I'll redraw A Bat and His City, but this is the first time I think I've done the concept justice.
The 2014 original came about because a song had me thinking "about the (fairly unhealthy) relationship Batmen have with Gotham City. I wanted to kind of play with the idea of Gotham as her own character, always pulling her boys back in...". This 2019 version came about because I heard another song that did the same thing!!
By now I'm sure some of you are familiar with how much I love and felt for exhausted, beaten down Terry from Hush Beyond/10,000 Clowns/2.0, I dunno, there's just something about Terry being so tired from leading double lives, balancing family, friends, college exams and still putting on the cowl night after night and going out to protect Gotham from itself...
I tried to add more narrative to it the painting itself this time around, so the direction he's facing and the lighting situation is more intentional instead of "well it looks cool" (which is my usual approach, ahaha). Terry's facing away from a brighter, warmer lighting raining down on him from above because he's too busy focusing on the cold world below. (The cold glow of duty versus the warm light of purpose ahem okay I'll shut up now)
I got my ass kicked by 3-point perspective and that camera angle of the human shoulder, I need a breather now
(I keep saying I'll stop drawing things inspired by the final shots of Return of the Joker but at this point we all know that's a bold-faced lie, I'M NEVER GONNA STOP)
Draw it again comparison
