I can walk you through it if you like, it's worth the tinkering. Lemme know if you want me to, and I'll note you when I'm less busy. : )

^__^ Alright. It varies from computer to computer, so I probably couldn't help you with troubleshooting, but this site here [link] has a forums section about "Monster Farm Online" and a thread "About Login Troubles..." (can't link you directly to it, sorry >_< that should point you where you need to go. Specifically, the photobucket image should be your guide once you have downloaded the VPN client, and the link someone posted to a gaming forum should help you find the download, although they didn't work on my computer.
You're looking for Softether VPN Client 2.0, and I found my download link on a Japanese Maplestory fansite. All you have to do is follow the instructions people present in the thread at monsterrancher.com, and you ought to be good to go.
You might also have to enable Japanese characters on your computer (go to Control Panel if you're on a PC, and if you're on a Mac, I can't help you D: ).
It's a fun game, though. I made some good friends, and although we couldn't communicate well, we helped each other learn a lot. You know, in the, like, hour we played together. XD
Also, if someone says "www" and you reply with "aaa," they'll know you're a foreigner.
XD
(w is their version of lol in Japanese- I don't know if you can read, I can read pretty well)

DX Unfortunately, I have too bad an understanding of the quests to progress to a higher level of training, so Sacre's stats were only worsening. I switched to a Pixie.
At the moment I quit playing until I learn some more Japanese and get a better PC for gaming. : ) Hopefully when I rejoin MFO, it will be even better.

Aw. DX
Hm, I should research this before playing. XP Im not too good with Japanese, but I better learn something, I guess. XD

Actually, the only real help small knowledge of Japanese will give you is the ability to read katakana (sometimes hiragana). That way you can recognize the names of monsters and most items, so you know what each quest is telling you to collect.
I also know quite a bit about the game, so ask me any questions! I had friends who taught me a lot, although I still can't figure out how to initiate multiplayer training and stuff. I've been taken into their parties all the time, though. It's useful if you can ask if someone will let you tag along with them in training, but unfortunately I can't figure out how to work Japanese characters in the game window, so I never got much more than the usual gaijin ignoring. But "Paatii wo join shite ii desu ka?" will get you lots of places as long as people don't get too curious and start asking you questions thinking you know how to respond, lol. If you can figure out japanese characters, let me know. That was one of my biggest turnoffs, no one wanted to talk with a kid using roomaji.
Or "dareka no paatii to isshou ni kari wo sureba ii desu ka?" In all my experience shouting random "please take me with you" (which is extremely useful, the items are excellent and the better the food, the better your stats), however, people just get curious and a little annoyed. Then again, there are also people who are fascinated with foreigners and will take every chance to ask you about what it's like playing the game from America.

Haha, yay. Fortunately, once you get it figured out, it's simple. I only ever played it on a crappy hand-me-down laptop, so I also quit cause I got tired of it freezing.
Yay, I remember when I first got it to work. I'd been tinkering for a week and it was the Fourth of July, and my friend and I were all sour cause we'd been bored and trying to get it to work for ages. I just grinned when it started up and didn't stop grinning until the peach pie made me sick.

I've played a little of the game, and what I've seen so far is great. Right now I'm having difficulties with the game closing on me, but it was fun while it lasted, and very pretty ^_^
(If I ever do make it back on, my username is Sanami, and my monster's name is Calernon)

I wanna play this so bad D: (is playing Monster Rancher 4 right now) so this would be fairly decent to play if you only know a few basic sentences and can't read Japanese at all?
and is it free to play?

Yeah, I can't understand a lot of it. I understand simple things like attacks, names of foods, and stuff like that. I have made friends though, and you need to know Japanese to communicate with people, unless you can find some foreigner buds (XD like me!). But once you learn how things work, you don't need reading experience at all.
As long as you're okay with downloading a little extra program that I can't guarantee isn't bad for your computer (although I've had no problems and have been using it for a week or two), then you're all set. I can give you instructions since you can't understand them yourself. XD
It's free to play, but many items can be bought cheaper with Moon Points (1k yen to every 100 MP- that's about ten bucks), and a ton of them are MP-exclusive. I plan on getting MP if I can in the future, though. Tecmo needs the financial support, and I want a Golem! Many monsters are unlockable via events or MP-exclusive items. Golems, Durahans, and quite a number of others.
So I've been playing free, but I'm jealous of my friends' monsters, haha. ;D So I'm gonna try to figure out how to pay yen over the internet...
Anyhow, I'd totally recommend it. The multiplayer is great.

You have to download Japanese characters for your computer. If you have Windows, it should be under Control Panel's Regional and Language Settings. You might have to set your computer's settings entirely to Japanese, so pages like Google will relocate to the JP versions, but it's necessary until you know your way around.
By the way, when you log on using the launcher, I'm on the Kalaragi server (there's a setting that you probably won't be able to read, but it's the larger of the two options), so create your character there or I don't think we can play together. If you're interested, I mean.

Yeah, it appears that there are only two. When you go into town, there are three channels. My friends and I go on channel 3, but I tend to prefer channel 2 when nobody else is on. It's the least-populated, IMO.

In my experience, I've got one of two errors (assuming you enter the right user ID and password): one means you're not on the correct server (check your VPN) and the other means, I think, your computer doesn't have enough room. If the login box isn't disappearing before you get the error, it's a problem with your server. Which VPN client did you download?

I can't look up exactly where I got mine right now, but I searched "Softether VPN server client 2.0" and downloaded it from a Rapidshare site, which I think I found in a forum about Japanese Maple Story. I couldn't find the English version, but the JP version works just fine for me.
For information on setting up a connection, this is going to be your best bet:
Set up a connection with the instructions here (pages 1, 9, and 10 should help you the most) [link]
I applied the settings here exactly: [link]
XP Hope it makes sense. Helping back-and-forth without an ability to take screenshots isn't easy.

ooohh.... sounds like a fun game. Wish it was in English. It's hard enough learning another Latin based language. I don't think I'm gonna take Japanese anytime here soon. XP It's strange though how the names are in English letters.

Oh. XD About that... the truth is, I can't figure out how to use Japanese characters in-game. o__o Weirdly enough, I can't seem to configure the language bar any differently... But yeah, a lot of people do the same thing, and a lot of stuff is in English, anyway.
The game is easily intelligible without knowing a spot of the stuff, at least. I don't know enough to know what people are saying, I just know "yes" and "no" and the names of some foods. XD
