Description This is a pic of me taken in Kyoto. We were staying at a Ryokan in the Gion district where all of the Geisha and Maiko work. Gion is the only place where the traditions of the Geisha have truly been maintained. This is also the only place in Japan where Maiko (apprentice Geisha) still exist. The Maiko are known for the white make-up and brightly colored Kimono. They also wear a different hairstyle from Geisha. Maiko are known as "living dolls." A Geisha will still wear white make-up and bright kimono if she is going to be dancing, so to the outsider, it's hard to tell the difference. Anyway, there was a studio in Gion which allowed me to don full Maiko attire and have a photo shoot. This was a dream come true for me. This is one of the highlights of my Japan trip and certainly an experience that I will never forget!

The package included dressing and makeup, a 30 panel photo shoot and a proof print that they printed immediately so I could pick my package. The package I ordered included 5 5x7s and I also got a free lami-card of myself and a free phone charm of myself (very cute!). All of that cost me around $130. I thought it was an awesome deal considering all that I got and all of the work that went into making me look like that. Most people don't even relize that it's me until I tell them! It was an awesome experience and I would have paid double for it if they had asked for it!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get to go to Japan and do this someday!

Thanks! I didn't know that I could even do that until a couple of ladies in my tour group told me about it. As soon as I got to Kyoto, I had our guide set up an appointment for me. It was incredible!

Thanks so much for the comment! I'm still baffled that I was able to dress up like that. That whole ensemble cost more than my house and my car put together! I will definitely do it again if I ever make it back to Kyoto! ; )

I love Kimono too...the one I'm wearing in that pic is worth over $250,000 - that's more than my house!!! I bought a few silk kimono when I was in Japan - they're sooo pretty!

that is alot! the one I'm getting is from an antique shop...in Kansas. my grandpa bought me a blue silk one with fish on it last year from China. You're one lucky person to get to wear that...I would give alot to do that...

I felt very nervous the whole time I was wearing it. I've studied Kimono, Geisha, and Maiko and nothing they wear is cheap. I was terrified that I might step on the fabric or something!!! My favorite kimono is the one that I bought in Tokyo at the Nakamise shopping arcade. It is a beautiful baby blue with a scene of Geisha on it - I have a red obi and a printed crepe obijime to go with it.

Cool, but it looks like they missed a spot or something on the back of your neck.

There is always a two pronged "fork" left unpainted on the back of a Maikos neck. It is supposed to remind people that under all of that makeup, there is a real person. During certain celebrations, a Maiko will have a three pronged fork left unpainted.
