Both of them started out as kids with tragic lives that aided in them seeking to gain a better life as compensation for what they didn't have when they grew up, but while Dio failed to accomplish his goal, Griffith actually succeeded. Because of their childhood, they ended up meeting the dark-haired, sword-wielding protagonist of their series, which would later on trigger a chain of events that had them transcend the limits of their human body through mysterious and ancient artifacts, becoming a vampire and a demon respectively. After these events, they became the hero's greatest enemy as they were both super strong, incredibly versatile, and super hard to kill, Dio because of his vampiric body, and Griffith due to residing on the Astral Plane of existence. In spite of their humble origins, they carried themselves as a dignified and charismatic young man, but were also known for their cleverness, resourcefulness and ruthlessness, as they carefully manipulated the people around them, and even going as far as mentally devastating the hero's love interest and sacrificing anyone that they were "friends" with in order to get what they wanted, which prompted the protagonist to swear vengeance upon them, but failed to do so in the end.
