Another take on that scene I was working on:Decided to get rid of the stalks/hairs, and use a different angle.
Used the crowd helper on a simple 4x4 CV-Point surface, with a shell and smooth modifier. Rendered in VRay using the Daylight System.
Slightly tone mapped the render, and reworked the colour in postwork, and added depth-of-field using a pre-rendered ZMap.
