Description Long, long ago, a group of pirates spotted a rather pretty youth taking a nap on the beach. They figured such a lovely, well-dressedΒ fellow must be someone important, such as a prince, and decided to kidnap him for ransom (besides, if the ransom thing didn't work out, he'd surely fetch a handsome price in the slave markets and all). They ambushed the sleeping lad and hauled him aboard their ship. There, they tried to tie him up, but the rope kept coming undone. By the third try, the helmsman started getting a bad feeling about all this and told the captain that this youngster must be favored by the gods, if not a god, himself, but the captain ignored him.

Things did not end well for those pirates when Dio finally woke up.

Anyways, felt like illustrating yet another story from Dio's past, and I've always found the story of this particularly ill-advised kidnapping rather amusing. For those who are curious, he attacked the ship with vines, turned those who jumped overboard into dolphins, and turned into a lion and ripped out the captain's throat (obviously, this is in the moments before he went all king of the jungle). He did give the pirates a few chances to let him go, but nope, no one ever listens to Dio's warnings...

He did let the helmsman live, though. ^_^

As for how I fit this into my version of Dio's history, I figure it's after his adventures traveling the known world (hence his clothes), but before he took his place on Olympus. It's also still back when he didn't really fight the Other too much, particularly in situations like this.

Overall, a fun exercise in composing an action shot and playing with colors.

Those fool pirates.

Love that you drew this, more people need to draw these famous moments of the gods!

Thanks! And yeah, they have so many great ones (and... not so great ones, but that's beside the point ).

I kinda want to see a pic of Hephaestus catching Ares and Aprhodite in that net. XD

lol! That one is a great story. It's kinda funny how there aren't more pictures of it.

If you ever get the inkling, or do you do commissions?
I'd pay to see you draw that.

Wow, those pirates made the worse decision of their lives, trying to kidnap a god. If only they listened to the helmsman. Poor helmsman must have been traumatized after that event and decided to give up piracy for good. I really like your depiction of Dionysus, most times he sounds like a jolly god as the god of wine, but can be terrifying when angered.Β

Great picture! It does a really good job of showing the fear and terror of the pirates and the power of an angry god. If you made comics for Egyptian Β and Greek myths I would read them!

*laughs* Definite understatement there! And I wouldn't be surprised if the helmsman never set foot on a boat again.

And thank you. Dionysus is one of my favorite characters from Greek mythology - especially once you piece together the myths.

I've considered trying comics again. Just gotta find the time!

Very intense rendition, does a nice job of translating Ovid to modern Comics.

Thank you. ^_^ I tried out a few new things with this one to try to make it more dynamic, so I'm glad the intensity came through.

Very dramatic. I likes it!

I don't know how you know so much mythology... I feel I barely know anything about it besides the basics. However, I wont complain, as I like seeing how you use it and describe it.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy it. I guess it's just that I've been into mythology since the second grade, so I've been reading about it for kind of a long time now.

Nothing wrong with that. I certainly am finding it an interesting point, and it gives you a nice theme for your artistic outlet. I'm not complaining about it!

I need to get back into drawing again... so badly NEED to...

Easier said than done. It's a distinct lacking of time in my case, and so many other activities that pull me away. Not to mention a slight lacking of concepts and ideas to draw... It's a little frustrating. When I have an idea, I can't draw (at work or whatever). When I can draw, I have no ideas (forgot the previous concept from when I was at work).

*laughs* I have that whole "I had a really cool idea but now all I can remember is that it was really cool!" problem, too. If possible, try carrying a little notepad with you - or heck, if you're at a desk, a pad of Post-it notes - and write those down for later.

Totally understand on the "no ideas whatsoever" front, too. Some people say you should just start doodling; personally, if I start doodling with absolutely nothing in mind, I end up with terrible stuff destined for the shredder or the fireplace. -_-; Β

All too often. I thought it was just me who kept having the "Oh! That's a great.... What was I thinking about again? It was such a great idea too... if only I could recall it..." I swear, if I could keep thoughts instead of lose them... I'd probably have some interesting work. (I think it's related to my ADHD... Too easily distracted. Like right now, when I should be finishing a metal model someone wanted me to make...)

Oh. And the Blank Piece of Paper is winning again right now... I can't doodle without an idea, or I get nothing anyway. I need to have the concept at least mostly in my head before I even start or the project is doomed from before I doodled. (Because I don't tend to doodle, I draw.)

Happy to see I'm not alone with these problems... Sorry that someone else is plague with them too...
