Ah, happier days. These two always seemed to make such a cute couple, which is probably why the show's creators did everything in their power to railroad this pairing as early as possible. Kinda lame actually.
But then again it's just one of a myriad of problems I had with the show (which still managed to be good despite its laundry list of flaws) so no use crying over spilt milk.
