Description This is something of a semi-sequel to my other painting The Selkie.

When I painted the original, I had in mind a kind of Little Mermaid story with a selkie instead of a mermaid (because selkies don't get enough love) and after watching a very beautiful film called Ondine, I felt inspired to continue telling the selkie's story...in a manner of speaking.

Yes, I realize that canoeing hardly makes someone a sailor, but the title fit.

gorgeous, and you're right that selkies should get more love (actually, between fish and seal, i'd pick seal so i think i prefer them to mermaids) but what was the thinking behind her looks? she looks almost native american to me, which is perfectly plausible, but i've always thought of selkies as more of a celtic thing and the looks of a seal conjure up doe eyes, upturned noses, rounded cheeks and freckles to me.

Thank you! I love selkies and the reason behind her looks was simply that I felt like there weren't enough women of colour in fantasy art, particularly when it came to sea creatures, so I took reference from the actress/activist Q'orianka Kilcher because she always looked like a selkie to me.

fair enough you're right, it looks really right, it's just not an obvious choice :L i agree on the WOC - or just POC actually - thing. i've become interested in that issue over the last couple of years after coming across an artist on here who draws harry potter characters as more diverse in ethnicity; harry with brown skin, the black brothers as part-chinese, etc. there's no reason to think of these characters as purely caucasian unless it's specified in the books, but everyone does. personally, i see harry as being pretty much white to look at, but i can see james as being mixed race, i've adjusted my image of sirius and regulus as being part-chinese and i definitely imagine hermione as very olive-skinned.
anyway, enough rambling :L
