Chapter 2: The backstory

The night was like every other night. Adam and Tommy both snuggling to each other on the couch watching a movie on the T.V. Tommy had his head laid on Adam’s shoulder. He placed his hand on his stomach and chuckled. Adam looked at Tommy with a smile,

“What’s so funny?”

“She’s moving again.” Tommy replied. Then he felt a kick what seem to be at his ribs. Tommy grunted and let out a breath.

Adam couldn’t resist and placed his hand on Tommy’s stomach.

“That must have been a strong kick to make you let out a noise like that.” Adam remarked.

Adam then saw what looked like a hand made a little bump on the skin. Adam placed his finger there and the little bump was gone.

“She’s been more active lately.”

Adam moved his head up in horror,

“Does that mean?”

“Yeah I might be getting close.”

“How can that be your due date isn’t till…”

Just then to break the next work in Adam’s sentence was the news.

“We interrupt your current programming for a special news report”

“Great what is it now?” Adam mumbled and sat and looked

“We are informed that a terrible rain storm along with thunder and lightning coming over Angel Grove. We are advise that everyone stay in their homes until the storm is over. Do not drive unless it is an emergency”

“That’s it? Just a thunderstorm?”

“Hold on Adam, think about it. We haven’t had a storm like this since we lived here.” Tommy said as he slowly got up. “Besides, I don’t think out little princess isn’t coming anytime soon”

~~~On the other side of Angel Grove: around the same time. ~~

“Are you sure?” I asked my friends. “I mean there is a storm coming. We need to stay indoors.”

“Come on. What are ya chicken?” My friend provoked me “All it will take is for you to drive us to another’s friend’s house.”

“How long is the drive?” I asked

“About 45 minutes.”

“No.” I said “I am not driving 45 minutes to a friend’s house.”

“You can just drive me there and drop me off.”

“Why should I?”

“I heard that boy you liked will be there.”

“That’s not the point.” I said as I blushed.

-After five minutes-

“I can’t believe I’m doing this” I said to myself letting out a breath.

A couple of our friends were in the back laughing and giggling. I was getting irritated but there wasn’t anything I could do. We were at a four way stop I went to a complete stop and was looking. A friend remarked

“Come on its ten at night. No one is coming.”

“Look I may be taking you. But I don’t want to be held responsible if you get hurt.”

I heard giggling again and I was more upset. I then slammed on my gas, at first they were laughing but then it turned ugly when my friend noticed the speed I was going.

“You can stop now” they said.

I ignored them. I kept going. I was hitting about 50 mph at this point.

“Stop please.” They said again more scared.

Everyone else was silent in fear what I was going to do next. I wasn’t paying attention, which sadly wasn’t the greatest idea. As I went into the next intersection, I saw a set of head lights. That was all I saw after everyone screamed.

~~Back at the Oliver-Park residence~~

Tommy was up grabbing something in the kitchen when he leaned on the counter holding his stomach. He felt more movement than usual. He then said,

“A..Adam?” He said loud enough for Adam to hear. Adam walked over to him in a hurry.

Adam gently touched Tommy’s shoulder when Tommy doubled over in pain. Adam knew and said,

“I’ll get the van warmed up.”

Adam hurried and walked out of the house with the door opened. Tommy slowly followed and leaned against the porch rail. Adam walked back up to him worried. He slowly walked him to the van and he started to back out of the drive way and driving down the neighborhood when it started to rain.

“Can you hear me?” said a voice towards me.

“Huh?” I said in my mind.

I was trying to open my eyes. I felt a finger open one of my eye lids. I saw a light it was really bright. I let out a groan.

“I’ve got a response from this one. How about the others?”

“No time! Let’s get the stretcher for this one!” Shouted the man.

I finally was able to see in my foggy sight that it was a paramedic. The person then placed a neck brace around my neck. I flinched and started to tear up and cry.

“You’re going to be okay sweetie.” replied a calm voice. It was a female nurse, wearing a pink shirt.

I was going to open my mouth to say something then I blacked out. The next thing I remembered was the women shouting.

“Let’s get her to the hospital now!”

Tommy almost shouted in pain as Adam tried to drive as fast as he could in the rain storm. Tommy shifted in his seat as another contraction wracked through his body. Adam was stopped by the traffic.

“No not now..” Adam said out loud.

“What?” Tommy said shifting in his seat again.

“The traffic is jammed up I can’t move.”

“I..It has to..” Tommy said as he hissed and breathed.

“W..why?” Adam asked.

“B..because..I think she’s coming..now..”

“Now?”

“Yes now!” Tommy shouted as he felt something pop in his body. Adam looked down and saw something wet forming down Tommy’s pant leg.

“Your water broke”

“I can see that.” Tommy said angrily.

Adam looked in the back and said.

“It’s a good think we thought up the mattress in the back..”

“Adam now..isn’t the time for..That!” Tommy shouted again. Adam hurried and got Tommy to lie down.

“Okay Tommy…Feel any pressure yet” Adam asked.

“Yeah..Kinda..” Tommy replied nervously.

“I guess this is it then.” Adam remarked.

All the medics were rolling me down the hallways of the hospital. They were done treating me. I was put on my new hospital bed. All I could remember was the sound of the medics talking to what sounded like my parents talking to the doctors outside of my room. I heard,

“She may not make it through the night” said the doctor

“But I don’t understand what hit her.” asked my father

“A semi-truck hit her. It looked like a side collision on the passenger side. Her car
flipped over.”

“Oh..God..” my mother replied and started to cry. My father hugged my mother.

I looked over on my side of the bed where they window and looked at the sky with reflecting light.

“What was that called again?” I asked myself.

Then I started to feel really weak.

Tommy was panting and he started to push making a screaming noise through his throat.

“That’s it Tommy. Another push now.” Adam encouraged.

Tommy pushed again and looked at Adam.

“I can’t do this…”

“Tommy yes you can. Our little girl is almost here. I can see the head now.”

“Re..really?” Tommy said almost chocked up.

“Yes and she has lots of dark hair.” Adam said almost tearing up.
Tommy was thinking for a split second then started to push again.

“Okay heads almost out, just breathe.” Adam said as he looked up to see if the traffic had moved.

“Whats wrong?” Tommy asked and started panting, fighting the urge to push again.
Adam got up and started to drive again.

“I can try to get us to the hospital.”

“But Adam.” Tommy moved his head up then planted it back on the pillow, “I don’t think I
can make it.”

Adam looked back at Tommy then at the road. Adam was going as fast as he could. Tommy started to push again and shouted,

“ADAM!!” he started to pant and scream.

“Hold on Tommy. I’m almost there.”

“She’s coming!!” Tommy screamed again and pushed.

“Oh..Sh..” Adam hurried and pulled over on the side of the road.

He looked and saw the head and Tommy trying to push the shoulders out. Adam grabbed the baby gently and moved the baby to her side.

“Okay try pushing again”

“I’ve been doing that already” Tommy groaned and pushed.

“You’re almost there Tommy. Big Push now.”

Tommy nodded and touched his chin to his chest and pushed and within seconds. Adam was holding their baby girl. Adam lifted up Tommy’s shirt and placed their baby on his bare chest for warmth. Tommy let out a breath that was running across the baby’s head.

“Come on Baby. Breathe for Mom and Dad” Adam said scared and he rubbed her back.
He hurried and grabbed his pocket knife and cut the cord. He hurried and tied it quickly, within seconds the baby opened its mouth and cried. Tommy chuckled and was almost choked up.

“She’s beautiful.” Adam said

“Yes she is and a surprise at that.” Tommy replied smiling

“Yeah. I thought she would wait till we got to the hospital. But she is stubborn like someone I know.” Adam remarked.

“What should we name her, Adam? In case they ask.” Tommy asked still looking at their baby girl.

“Oh I don’t know. I was thinking maybe Crystal.” Adam replied grabbing a towel to cover the baby in.
Tommy said, “I agree Crystal Marie Oliver-Park”

“Sounds good Tommy. Just relax the ambulance should be here. Hopefully our van can keep us and our little girl warm till then. ” Adam ran his fingers through Tommy’s hair then placed their baby girl in a towel.

“Huh?” I said in my mind.
