as far as the too old part tho,im not so shure..
Spike is only a "baby" by dragon standards....he was hatched by twilight when she was a small child,if i had to make a guess id say she's only about 5-6 years older than he is.(witch i suppose is fare gap)
in fantasy,dragons are a little tricky when it comes to defining their age/maturity compared to other species.
that being said...their relationship is clearly a family bond above anything els.
