This image is dedicated to the wonderful for her support, encouragement and most of all her friendship.

This is a portrait of Celebrian, wife of Elrond and mother of Arwen. Caradhras the Redhorn gate does indeed have a dark name. Celebrian left Rivendell to visit her mother Galadriel in Lothlorien. While she was crossing the Redhorn pass she was attacked by orcs. Although she was rescued she never fully recovered from the wounds to her body and to her spirit. She left her husband and children to seek the Grey Havens and to find peace across the Western oceans.
Eventually this image will be part of a larger, more complex picture but I wanted to create a picture that made use of this figure at full size.

Wow, this really captures the trauma of being a captive and not knowing what life would bring from day to day.

Obviously this isnt how I pictured Celebrian physicially, but you've captured her essence and state of mind at one of her worst stages of her life, and it must have been hard to get that feel.

Quite symbolical take, I like the use of parchment-like background and calm colours

Here are a few thoughts. I would add a slight highlight on her hair which look flat ATM. A kind of changes which usually no one except the creator notices It's a bit tricky because light source on the model is not from the top/general as I would expect.

Maany thanks for this. Hair is my greatest challenge. As I am hopeless at painting from scratch I have to use a combination of painting, brushes and various bits from stock photos, brushes and purchased pdf resources. This never looks quite perfect - but I'm slowly getting better at it (emphasis on slowly!)

With a mouse or tablet? It's possible with both tools, but takes a lot more time and patience with mouse, especially to fit a photo. Taking hair from another stock is a good idea, hair brushes itself need some tweaking. Probably, I never use them, hair are my fav thing to paint

I only have a mouse. I can paint some parts of hair - but no way can I get anything close to photo-realism if I paint a whole head full of hair. I often use other stock for sections, as well as the PSDs, and I use brushes to get the flyaway strands at the edges, or simply paint them.

She’s a lovely model--but it’s not how I picture a daughter of the Noldor--bare chested--like some bondage strip tease--pardon my coarse reference.

Then I thought about it. She narrowly escaped the fate of Finduilas (see story of Turin). The old story suddenly fits in a modern setting. A home invaded. A woman abducted--assaulted--raped. She goes to pieces. Can’t go back to the house--or won’t leave the house

Did you intend this interpretation? Doenn’t matter. Works for me. You put it in a new light for me.

Kudos.

Thank you so much for your comment. I wanted to show her just after she has been rescued - in the rages of her finery, terrifed and shamed but still trying her best to be defiant, and to protect herself. I've done a lot of work with people who have been traumatised and I wanted to express these emotions in my picture.
I am not sure if she was physically raped, but I believe her soul was raped. She was violated and made to feel utterly powerless in a place she shoul dhave been safe.
It was a difficult decision to use this base. I don't ever want to make violence entertaining or titillating but I did want to show her vulnerability. Hopefully this will give some people an insight into the damage done by violence.

It's beautiful! Thank you so much for the dedication, it's very sweet of you! I love that you put the story behind the picture in your comments. It makes it easier for people like me who don't know all the lore to understand and appreciate it

I am so very glad you like it
I am making another couple of images of this elf - and I'll put a more detailed version of the story in the one I'm entering in a competition.
Some of the tales hidden away in the indexes or the obscure books are very beautiful but very sad - they make the elves a bit more "human" - showing they can make mistakes, can be ruled by their passions and they can be hurt in their spirits as well as their bodies.

I can't wait to see the other images And it sounds really interesting. I'm glad that you can put them to images and brief summaries for us!

Thanks muchly. This is a story that really grabbed me when I read it. Although Tolkien never said how she was hurt other than the poison in a wound she must have been deeply traumatised to leave her husband and children to find some peace.

Great interpretation and fleshing out of the story

btw, "traumatized" has a "z" in it...

Sorry, I just couldn't resist

I'm feeling traumatised by your spelling
On a more serious note, this is just another example of all the layers in Tolkien's work. If you really want to understand how hard it was for him when Arwen marries Aragorn you need to know about his twin brother, and his wife. But Tolkien won't hand that to you on a plate - it's hidden away in hte indexes and other books.

It also means I can use the figures in mauch larger scale for the standalone pics. Plus I'm having fun experimenting with more abstract backings, and starting to make my own.
