I did a lot of photography myself in the past so here are my two cents:
If you go macro you have to use a higher aperture to get the full front side in focus (otherwise even a very small difference to an angle of 90° to the surface will bring most of it out of focus).

Of course this doesnt mean that every thing always has to be in focus to be a good picture
