Photoshop CS2
Intuos 2
Hours: ... lost count, somewhere between 15 to 25? Doesn't really matter at this point.

[First hour:]
I sketched her face on a rough background. At first, I wanted her holding a stalk of dandilion(sp?) seeds and blowing them in the wind. But that didn't work out.

[Next 5 hours:]
I turned on the lamp and shined it on my face, hand, anything that I can get to see where light should fall on her and how to get the translucency of the skin to work.

I also gave her freckles at this stage with my new freckles brush.

[Next 5 hours:]
Were soley dedicated to the eyes and hair. Kaya (as my own character) has a 'history' of cutting her own hair. I thought I would depict at least a bit of this to add to her personality.

[The Rest:]
.. mostly touch-ups. I wasn't happy with the over-all picture and the impact it would give.

I eventually paid more attention to the skintone and added much needed 'noise' and additional freckles.

Last to be painted were her lips - whose color I had changed at least 5 times from orange, to pink, to red, and brown... finally settling on 'pomegranate'.

It took me awhile. But I think I realize why I love this.
It's all her imperfections that make her beautiful.

Great work.

Wow, I LOVE the detail in this picture. I can't imagine it took you so many hours to complete this entire thing. Especially the five hours spent in pure examination of detail. Wow. I wish I had five hours just to spend looking at this work, my friend...

Amazing.

I think the freckles probably added to the realism.
I couldn't really use a reference for this, so... I have to admit I didn't know what I was going to do next half the time.

I'm glad you liked it, thanks for commenting!

This is very fine work indeed. I like the realism of it, especially her eyes and hair (the time you spent on them paid off nicely!). The freckles on her nose are excellently done; elsewhere they look a little indistinct (or is that noise? It's a bit hard to tell, sorry). The effect of the light on her cheek looks good, though, to be a bit picky, the skin-tone looks a little out when compared with the shaded skin.

Overall, this shows a lot of skill. Great job!

This is my first 'skin-only' painting and skin translucency was frustrating to say the least.
I eventually picked an orange-ish tan. The freckles on her skin are mostly noise and only the ones on her nose are 'focused'. Great eye you have!

Very impressive the amount of time you put into this, btw.

I'm still learning to paint, I'm sure I'm taking way too long somehow.

Not at all! I've been known to sniff chinese ink sometimes I love the earhy smell.. I'm probably happiest when I have sheets of new paper (nothing smells like watercoulour paper, mmmmm) and tons of new toys to play with
I'm actually wering some acrylic right now! (just got out of the studio )

Ah!
Paint is so fun! I don't have a studio, though, and cleaning up paint has always been so painful. I guess I took on digital because of that.

Ah yes! That's why I had to get a tablet. Have you tried programs like painter or photoshop? You would do very well with them - much better than me.

not-sleeping In reply to Klyph [2006-06-16 02:34:53 +0000 UTC]

I've tried photoshop.. I've got the crappy fanart in my gallery to prove it
Maybe if I had a tablet, but as it stands with a mousie about the only non frustrating thing I can so with photoshop is add a border to my scanned works

Ooh, nice new Avatar!
I didn't think the fan art was crappy. But my work wasn't as good until I got a cheap tablet -- it helped me figure out if a Wacom was worth it.

not-sleeping In reply to Klyph [2006-06-21 03:45:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! For not hating the fanart and for noticing the snappy new avatar I played with my latest self portrait.. I like it but I'm thinking it feels a bit overdramatic..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Klyph In reply to not-sleeping [2006-06-22 15:10:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... Maybe if the avatar had a bit of gray it won't seem too dramatic? I like it just as is though. It shows you're a painter.

Klyph In reply to rebeccasx [2006-06-15 06:24:12 +0000 UTC]

Much thanks! I'm not as proficient at color as you, though. I spend at least 5 hours trying to get colors right. Is there a technique to that other than the color theory?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rebeccasx In reply to Klyph [2006-06-15 08:12:30 +0000 UTC]

When I started digital painting, I would make colour pallettes by taking photos of different skintones and saving the oclours by using the colour picker and dropping onto my pallete. Once I got used to the blending colours, I could get lazy and use just about any colour skintone and use the colour balance to get he skintone I want. Another great way to make the skin "pop" is once you have painted your pic, use the unsharp mask to slightly sharpen the edges and use threshhold. It makes it look more realistic Remeber too, that what ever colours you have in the background, lightly blend them into the skin so it looks more natural

Klyph In reply to rebeccasx [2006-06-23 04:43:57 +0000 UTC]

That's the most sound advice I'd ever received on digital painting thank you so much! I printed this out and couldn't wait to play around in Photoshop. Are you currently working as a colorist?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rebeccasx In reply to Klyph [2006-06-23 06:20:31 +0000 UTC]

no, unfortunately. I did a few years back but I've been out and away from my art for so long, im just getting back into it

Klyph In reply to rebeccasx [2006-06-23 14:14:00 +0000 UTC]

Where are you currently working now? It must be hard getting a job as an artist anywhere. But if I ever have a design firm, I'd contact you. You make a great team leader with your ability to explain things.

First I didn't notice the difference, but I do now. I like them both actually, the WIP and end result. She is very pretty. I like how you drew her and how she is in many other images of you somehow. I like the hair and the eyes the most!
