Hello! I'm from Project comment
Firstly, I like the pose you made, it looks very friendly, same for the facial expression. Also, I love the color you used. I would say, it needs a bit of shadows for the white parts of the fabrics and for the skin (but apparently you're colorblind so don't consider this). Also, the you did a great jobs with the highlights on the boots and the leather on her breast.
However, I think the metal parts like buckles need some highlights or shadows. Also, the buckles seems just to be "there". How can I explain this ? The buckles need to follow the shape of what they are on top of. If it's not clear, feel free to tell me!
Besides, the left hand is a bit off. The thumb has a weird shape and the wrist is a bit too tight compared to the arm. The folds of the cloack don't seem real, I don't think it would be like this with this position. Maybe check for references. And last thing, the bullets on her belts are a bit wobbly and those in front should be bigger than those in the back.
Well, that's it. I think it's a great pictures, I love the contrast between the dark red and the light green.
By the way, I don't really know how colorblind works but did you already try to paint in black and white, and then coloring it in photoshop ? This way, you can perfectly see where you put the light and shadows with the black (or another colour if black and white don't work for you). Check Sarah Tepes channel on youtube, she's doing this on Krita
Anyway, I hope it helped you a bit, keep it up!

Thank you so much for your comment -- you're dead on about the white blouse not being detailed enough as far as shadows go. I should have been more bold about it. And I get what you're saying about the buckles -- I didn;t give their forms enough attention.
As far as black and white goes, I never tried doing something in greyscale and then coloring it in. I'll give those videos a look. I get shades that are similar mixed up, so there just may be no help for it. :-/
But thank you very much for your input -- I'll keep it all in mind as I work on stuff in the future!

Hello! I saw your work from the weekly commenting project
I really like the line work and colouring you've did! Your lines are very details, from her face to the tiny equipments on her outfit. I can see the contrast between the dark themed outfit and the character's light skin and happy smile. It makes me belief that she is a sunshine-type kind of girl, but also a badass when she wants to be. The textures you did is really good too! I can see the boots are smooth and metallic because of the shines.
For the shading, I think you can add a bit more on the white clothes (is that a shirt? Or… I dunno what that's called sorry). The shading on her cape and corset is very sufficient that I can clearly see where the folds are. But the white areas seem to lack this. There are simply some shades on the side and near her armpit and that's all.
By the way, your style in this work reminds me of doubleleaf. He's another artist on deviantart that use detailed lines and simple shading..
Hope that helps! You’re art is still great, though.

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment -- it really helps to know what I should be focusing on in the future. I think you're right on the money about her blouse; I definitely didn't do enough for the shading there.

Hi, i found your piece on projectcomment and i absolutely love your piece, it’s warm, peaceful and happy, I love that face expression you did, the pose and the simplicity of the drawing itself, the colors are well done I would say even with a red-green colorblindness you made it work!, now I would start by saying the piece seems to lose it’s details in some areas due to too much light and too much dark, try working on values, anatomy wise it seems good in lengths but the waist should be a bit wider and the hips too, her left leg seems slightly bigger than the right one, i might be mistaken, her breasts should be slightly higher and she looks really flat in your drawing, so try working on that by shading it, the corset, handguards and boots are good and belts too, I would say there’s too much light in it and too much dark, I can’t explain well as I’m not an expert but the contrast is big, sometimes that’s not bad, but I think the corset deep dark could have been a bit lighter, the nose is good and mouth too just give it a bit more life since it’s smiling and the eyes a little bit the eyes brows too, but I still think they look quite good, the hair silhouette is good, work your forms and it will be more awesome, think that’s it, I know nothing about backgrounds so won’t comment on it, overall great job and keep it up, I wanna see more! 😊

Thank you so much for taking the time the time to comment. I was a little worried the contrast might be too strong -- I have a feeling that will forever be a matter of hit or miss for me (I would have preferred being more subtle in some areas, but I've been told to be more bold and some of my friends said it looked fine before I posted it). I'll keep a thought on that in the future as I work on pieces.
By flat, do you mean small breasts? That happened for two reasons --1. I feel really weird giving Ruby bigger breasts, and 2. I opted to consider the corsette to be more rigid than most clothing would be -- closer to armor than clothing. Maybe that was a mistake, because it removed the chance to add some curves to her torso. One of these days I'll get it right, though.
Thank you again for the input -- I really appreciate it!

For someone who's red-green colorblind the red hues are done wonderfully! I'm sorry to leave this so short but some below have similar points i was going to make... I would still put bolder grey shadows to the white shirt, and maybe reference the hands a bit more?
But even so, awesome work!

Thank you! It's really reassuring to know I did them well -- I pulled the base color from a screencap of the show, and then played with the HSV value here and there. It's always a bit of a crapshoot, though.
Bolder grey on the shirt probably would have helped, you're right. I need to be braver about that in the future.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for teh compliments!

Thanks for the pointers -- Hands are always semi-hit-and-miss for me, and they were a big issue in this piece (originally they were positioned slightly further away from her body, but then I changed the angle of her arms), and the way the right hand is wrapped under the edge of the bench did not help judge its size. But I like the proportion tip you mentioned -- I'll need to keep that in mind.
The legs... ugh. I need to learn to not draw this type of posture -- it makes getting the legs right absolute torture. Basically, I had this same issue in the Blake Belladonna picture, where the fact that the character is leaning forward causes some opaque shadows that make it very difficult to foreshorten the legs correctly. Clearly I missed on that this time!
But thank you for the kind words -- Ruby is adorable, so I'm glad I captured that characteristic.

I love how incredibly these characters turn out in your style! From an emphisised anime-esque cartoon to a realistically proportioned woman. It's like seeing those "20 of your favorite cartoon characters as adults" compilations. I LOVE those.

Thank you!
And I love those sorts of compilations, too, which is why I think I'm having more fun with this than I expected to. Not that my stuff is photorealistic or anything, but, like you said, changing the proportions alone can give a character a whole new look. Fortunately there are plenty of characters to move on to next, in addition to other series (The OCs will still keep showing up, of course. I have a R&E piece that's about 40-50% done already).
