Description The not-so-shy purple fox from my last drawing.

I've christened her 'Kneezle'

I'm enjoying this new style immensely and am now practicing drawing anime styled characters in various poses & positions rather than simply standing up straight, facing the viewer.

Its all done in photoshop - sketched out the basic idea multiple times on the tablet and then 'inking' over the lineart with the pen tool before colouring it in and doing some rudimentary shading.

I must confess to getting a little lazy with the shading - this picture was taking me ages to finish and I was getting impatient near the end. I expect to work a lot faster as I get better at this digital 'etch & sketch' I call photoshop .

As always I appreciate any tips, advice and comments people can throw my way, I have tons to learn and am enjoying the ride!

You should work with Tom...or do you already?

Haha, you flatter me terribly! :3

I haven't done anywhere near as much work as Tom has with his drawing.

...and I seriously doubt my level of talent could come anywhere close to what he's done.

What! no! - this is my line art.

This drawing is all mine

I've credited anything that I've coloured i.e. the first few images in my gallery.

After that drawings are all my own work including this one.

Ohhh she's beautiful <3 Especially her eyes, they're very captivating I love all the small details, such as clothing folds and the belt
lol it's ok if you got lazy on shading, we all do that xD

Thanks for your comment! <3

This one has turned out more popular than I thought it would seeing as its just a straight forward 'facing the audience pose' with the aim of designing the character's basic appearance.

Thanks! <3

That really means a lot to me.

I'm really surprised at how popular this one is since I rushed the shading at the end and even then its still only the second drawing I'd ever done on photoshop.

Very nice ^^
Can you tell me how you manage to get the paper lineart that clean in Photoshop? I have no tablet, So I need to scan the linearts in before I can do anything with them xD
I'm pretty good at Photoshop actually, but I just don't know how to get the lineart that clean D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kneezle In reply to ManFox [2010-01-03 16:33:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Before I say anything, I've gotta mention I'm really new to photoshop and digital artwork so some of my method will probably appear really basic - I am open to advice and tips...

If I'm working off a scanned sketch, I leave the sketch as a separate, background layer and all the digital work is done on new layers on top of the sketch using the sketch as a 'rough' (depending on how detailed the sketch is) guide.

First off though I blow the image up large, maybe four or five times the size of the intended final size. This lets me get up close and detailed with the line art whilst covering up any rough edges and mistakes when the image is shrunk down to size when its finished.

The lineart takes me hours - easily the longest part of the image. I go over every line in the sketch with the pen tool and cleaning up the lines with brush, eraser and many other different tools used imaginatively depending on the thickness of the line, position, curve, etc.

I'm still learning the basics of the program and the style so doing the lineart alone takes me upwards of 20 hours or so but its worth it for the clean look you get at the end.

Hope this helps - thanks again for your comment! <3

Okay, sounds like a hell load of work you've got there ^^

I just thought about something and (not sure if it will bring up the desired results), but what if you use the pen tool to simply, well... "select" the lines like a custom shape, turn it into a selection and then simply use a black brush inside that selection? That might go faster if you simply do e.G. the whole outter line at first, and then depending on the size you do the remeaining lines?
Or maybe that is how you do it anyway and I'm just mistaking something

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kneezle In reply to ManFox [2010-01-03 16:55:50 +0000 UTC]

Nah thats not how I do it but I know what you mean.

Unfortunately then you're relying on photoshop for a lot of the work and unless your sketch is really cleaned up already (almost semi-inked in), photoshop is simply gonna replicate what you've already got.

I see myself going round the whole thing the same way I already do just to clean up everything the program missed. Not to mention my sketches are never clean enough to get even -that- far. (See the sketch example in my gallery)

I'd be struggling to make it work let alone achieve the clean lines. Heh, the method I'm using also feels clean and accurate

I'm just rambling now ^_^

great im loving the line work is it digital or you make it whit pens and stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kneezle In reply to HOLIMOUNT [2009-12-29 19:18:16 +0000 UTC]

I sketch it out with a pen (sometimes straight onto photoshop with the tablet).

Then I do the lineart digitally. I'm still really new to photoshop so that part takes me aaaages >.<

But I love the clean even lines you end up with once you're happy with the proportions in your sketch.

I only hope I can keep that together when I start trying more complicated poses - figures & people drawing is really new stuff for me :s
