Description
There are at least 26 species of Ladybird that are native to the UK, and the Seven-spot Ladybird (Coccinella Seprenpunctata), is one of them! Not all Ladybirds here in the UK look typical of them. Some for instance have hardly any red colour at all, or can be inverted, such as black with red spots. Some are yellow with black spots. But this is more of the typical Ladybird we have here in the UK, red with black spots. Ladybirds are classed as a kind of Beetle.
There are many different types of Red, black spotted Ladybirds but the good news is, they seem to have their own number of black spots. The Seven-spot Ladybird has a rather interesting way of defending itself. One is of course, the use of bright colours, making them look unappealing but this is of course, not a guaranteed method. The more fascinating method they possess, is a form of controlled bleeding. Sometimes when handled, the Ladybird will release a rather smelly, yellow substance from their joints, which can stain your hand, so try to be a bit careful!
