Do you see me?

I live on the edge of your perception.

The flicker of shadow out of the corner of your eye, the chill that laces up your skin for no reason, the whisper that makes you turn your head to find no one there. the stench of rotted, hidden death that makes you flinch.

Who am I?

Dear one, I am your angel, your own little piece of personal heaven come to earth. Can't you see the wings? Never mind that they are black. It happens to the very best of us. Even the Morning Star can tell you that.

Why am I here?

Isn't it obvious? I am here for you. So that you can turn to me in your times of absolute need. You know the time. The hour of the wolf when you're huddled on the bed clinging to the sheets around you, clutching at your hair with as a desperation that's coiling. You feel it from your gut to your fingertips, cutting into places you never knew you had. You're crying and you don't even know why. All that you know is that you're lost and you can't remember how or why you got that way.

Don't cry. I'm here now.

I will lick the tears from your feverish cheeks with a razor tongue and soothe that furrowed brow with hands that are just a little too cold to be comfortable. I'll listen to all your sins and offer you salvation in worse ones, acts that will make your little past indiscretions looks paltry in comparison so that you can take refuge in their memories. I'll hand you the tools to your own unique destruction and it will be so beautiful. The way you will murder yourself with your own hands will be a work of art, my art, my reason for existing.

And you will thank me for it. I know you don't believe me but you will. You will. They always do.

You will thank me with your last breath with blood on your lips and a prayer without faith in your heart.
