A critique as a reward! This is for ProjectComment projectcomment.deviantart.com/ .
Overall, this is pretty good. The artwork is sort of a mixture of painting and Megaman Legends. I say the latter because part of the character's hair sticks out to both sides in solid triangles with no discernible strands. I rather like the beam of light shining down on him. That is an effect I've always been fond of. The details on his entire form are, overall, decent. The curves and perspective are good, as we can see what's in the background and foreground, and I like the blood on his clothes. Excellent job on the main part of his hair. It's so richly detailed.
But I will be a little bit critical. The whole thing is a bit too glossy and a tad on the cartoonish side, almost like The Last Airbender. I'm not saying I dislike that. I'm saying it could stand to be a style all its own. Also, why is his top hair well defined and spikey, yet the triangle parts of his hair are made to resemble Tronne Bonne's? Finally, what is that... tail like thing sticking out to the side of his left leg? It has what appears to be a crystal in it. Is it his source of power? What? I'd like to know.
This is actually pretty nice. I rather like it, although it doesn't quite make my List. However, you've definitely got some talent. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not entirely sure what the tail/orb is all about as he's not my character, he's 's. As I said in the description, I got partway through and realized that I had fucked up with the strands of hair by his face and I didn't feel like going through four or five layers and detailing them each individually which is why they're so plain compared to the rest.

This is a cute character. He seems to be a bit of the hermit type, which I totally relate to.Β
Β Β Β One thing that confuses me about this piece, however, is the differential details. His hair is layered and shaded with multiple values. Don't get me wrong, it looks amazing! I wish I could shade hair like that. It just looks a bit out of place next to the very solid shading of the rest of the body. The hair shading adds in a lot more details than the line art alone could do, however the rest of the body, especially the shirt and pants, seem to lack this trait. Compared to the hair, it leaves the rest of the body looking flat.Β
Β Β Β The other thing that really stuck out to me was the slender-man-esk arms. His elbows are all the way down on his legs. If you try sitting in this position you should notice that with your arms down like that, the elbows won't rest on your legs. Rather, they should be level with the bottom of your rib cage. If he were leaning forward with shoulders drawn in, then yes you could get the elbows on the legs but you would also have a different angle on the head and neck as well as the shoulders.Β
Β Β Β Easy way to monitor the length of your arms is to look at the distance from the thinnest part of the waist, to the shoulders, then with your pencil, pen, finger on the computer screen, just swing the angle out without changing the length.Β
I know that sounded like a lot of negative things but I still really like this piece. That hair is fabulous. If you just apply the same techniques to your clothing, the quality this piece would skyrocket. Even though your shading lines on the body were pretty solid in shape, you did have a nice gradient in them, giving the image a softer look.Β
Nice job!

Thank you for the critique!
How would you suggest I show more detail in the clothing and skin without it becoming TOO cluttered and busy? The reason I left it at just the hair was because of the shape of it - it is really spiky and, well, hair like! So there was opportunity to show the texture of it. I'm not sure how I could do that with the clothing without it looking kind of strange - any suggestions?
I have a bad habit of making really long and skinny (cough*spaghetti*coughcough) arms and legs, so thank you for catching that! I will have to work harder next time.

Personally, clothing is not my strong suit either. I've found that the easiest way to practice/learn is to look at photos that have clothing styled similarly in fit to the clothing in your picture.
I looked through my favorites and found a photo that has a nice loose clothing fit comparative to what you would have in your picture, but is also a nice solid color so you can see where the shadows are rather than getting overwhelmed by the color.

Because of the differences in sleeves and the pose, I wouldn't suggest adding shadows in the exact same places but look down at your own shirt as you look at this one. There are typically 3 major wrinkles/shadow spots on any shirt.
1)right above/on the pectoral muscles/breasts;
2) wrinkles below on the stomach show most when a character is sitting or leaning forward;
3) Shoulder wrinkles which show most when shoulders are arched but make sure you avoid making those symmetrical which is a common mistake.
This is actually a point that i also really struggle with. XP But practice makes improvements so just keep at it!

Thank you! I love trying new ways of shading - only problem is I can't find one that I stick to consistently. XD

Yes, exactly! :3 Shading is so difficult sometimes, especially around the face.
