Description Acrylic on canvas, 36X48 inches. 1999 -

Began this one in August of 1999, based on a drawing I had done ten years prior. Thinking more in terms of a sea nymph that a mermaid, seeing as how "mermaid" has become a bit of a pejorative, evocative of beach side shop novelty lamps and tuna fish cans.
If there is a musical equivalent, apart from the piece of the same name by Ravel , it would likely be the elegiac theme from Howard Hanson's 2nd Symphony, seasoned by a Saturday afternoon drifting into sunset, when all the blue-greens melt into orange-browns...
I can remember being 4 or 5, sitting on the tail-light fin of my father's car, hoping that no one would notice when he drove away... hoping that I could somehow merge into the sunset as we rode into it. I've since discovered that such a thing could likely only happen when you die... drat.
A tail-light fin shaped headstone could be a lovely thing. Especially if it lit up after dark.

Unfinished, but she's hanging above my sofa as if she were.

Thanks for looking

Beautiful and horrific biology. A goddess freak like the girl in india with four legs. I absolutely love it. Instead of ostracizing them, Let's make our freaks gods. Their special gifts point to the sacred truth of our nature as genes.

gorgeously rendered flesh, especially the look of slipperiness on the parts of her that are a darker shade of pink/red. and also that wall on the right makes the composition more interesting~~

This is one of the paintings in which I see your pencil-art. I always felt curiosity to see how you could combine your styles. And the results are, of course, smashing. A true work of amazing art. Favorite.

You remind me of john jude palencar. Not in style or anything like that. But you've straight up mastered bringing the beauty of fantasy, that's somehow logical, together with the quality and techniques of the highest level of art. o.O Your work always has this original quality that leaves me stunned. And to top it off, you're always willing to talk about your work... and you do it well. O.o

It's beautiful and hideous at the same time. Fantastic mixture. Love it.

This is different from you usual work, but at the same time, it is so "you"..... For some reason my monitor does not do your pictures/scans justice. I can only imagine how rich this is in person.

A tail-light fin shaped headstone that glowed in the dark would definately bring a little light or humor to a cemetary......but you are eons away from that path!!!

Undin !!! Oh my gosh!!! In Philippines mythology, undin is a water-spirit often mischievous, and unlike its Western counterpart, it likes to take vengeance and cause horror among humans that destroy the waters. The undin is a slimy and small creature, much like Gollum.

But your painting has created a refreshing angle for me about that creature. It looks finished to me. Thanks for sharing.

Her fringed appendages and slippery spirals are as biologically credible as her face is compelling - part pharaoh, part bearded lady.

I'll watch out for her next time I'm by the seashore.

It's very beautiful, but kinda sad.

It just puts off a hurt feeling(atleast to me). Maybe it's the raw feeling of the color choice.

I love the composition though.....
