Lynn’s life had always been an erratic one with consequences beyond her control. At a young age, she was abruptly taken from her home of Irapuato at the behest of her parents and taken to live with family friends in the Mission District of San Francisco, away from family and familiarity. There she would spend well over a decade of time as an undocumented student, pursuing her education with an ever-present tension looming over her. Then world affairs sparked misfortune upon misfortune as she began her college years. The war quickly fell into calamity, biochemical warfare tore claimed friends’ lives and tore apart her adoptive host family. A collage of shocking loss painted itself across the backdrop of war and disease.
Her life fell into a blur as Lynn pushed her way through community college to an economics and business degree and irked out a life for herself. Through it all, she abandoned any semblance of hobbies or recreation she had. Work was all that mattered; surviving was all that mattered. And so she worked as an investment advisor from client to client and earned what else she could as a stock market trader. While the executives and business people she surrounded herself with aspired for greatness, Lynn sought out safe, comfortable mediocrity in her work. As long as she fit in with the crowd and met the status quo, as long as she performed at the average and lived a predictable life, conflict and disaster would never harm her.
Despite her fundamental aversiveness to leisure, Lynn values joy and the ability to do whatever satisfies her on a day to day basis, expressing this with some level of eccentricity when she is comfortable enough to do so, whether it be through retail splurging or her raucous manner of handling more casual conversation. Still, her desires and actions conflict. The way she wishes to live her life barely reconciles with the way she must live her life. At the end of the day, she would rather survive than thrive.
