I love your stuff.
Do you use leather scraps?
And how big is the needle you use for the stitches?

I use a mix of scrap leather from previous projects and straight from a side of leather, primarily buffalo and tooling hide.
my needle can range in size, often I use a heavy gauge pyramid needle(thin needles tend to bend in my hand), but the needle is irrelevant seeing as I don't actually poke the holes with the needle itself.

OOhhh
What do you use for the holes?

I'd like to start with leather, but I have no idea how to start it out.

we call it a "rake" or a "fork", dont know for sure its real name.
its a steel, 3 pronged fork like device that you hammer(with a rubber or rawhide mallet--anything else destroys the tool) ours is antique(along with my friends 1901 singer leather sewing machine--pure excellence I might add.)
it is a rather expensive craft.tandy, can help u get started.
