Description (Species for BlackGate MUX)
Name: Pahoehoemanu (pa HO eh ma noo) or A'a bird
Habitat: Crimson Isles
Description: A little larger than a horse, this tropical bird resembles a culmination of different 'typical' bird species. The beak is similar to a parrot or cockatoo, with the crest much like a cockatoo, though the plumage typically is shaded crimson, orange, and gold, save for the tail, the feathers of which are gradient towards a very downy coal black. Talons (three front, one rear) measure four to six inches off of foot-long (front) toes. The tail plumage is typically one and a half to the size of the body, the total of which typically equals the very long wingspan of the giant bird. In addition, the A'a bird displays two tendril-like antennae from its crown, as well as two more: one for each wing, at the wing-blade, and two also from the hip-joint of each leg, following the lines of the tail. The beaks tend to be golden (female) or red (male) during the youth of the bird, steadily growing to a dull coal-grey in old age.
Prey/Natural Enemies: No known enemies native to the Crimson Isles. (The species is looked on as Reh-an's holy servants and messangers. It is a crime of treason to hunt, harm, or kill one of these sacred animals.)
Other notes: Despite their large size and the fact it is illegal to hunt the Pahoehoemanu, they are rarely seen, as they prefer their caves inside the volcano and hunt at night (their plumes are also very reflective, so often they seem to be on fire when light does catch on them from below.) Feathers are found on trails from time to time, and are considered lucky and a blessing from the Goddess, as is to spot one of her messenger birds. It is not known how intelligent the birds are, but if they ARE messengers of the Goddess, they're likely not 'birdbrains'.
