Description For character design class. These four characters are from L. Frank Baum's (the guy who wrote Wizard of Oz) lesser known book series The Sea Fairies and Sky Island. The story of Sky Island is about a girl named Trot who goes in search of some kind of magical island in the sky, accompanied by ex-sailor and friend of her father Cap'n Bill Wheedles (far left), and slightly dense/slightly magical Button Bright. They meet Polychrome, the daughter of the rainbow (far right) along the way.

I am coming to the conversation very late. I discovered SKY ISLAND in 2012 when I did a stage adaptation of it as theater performance about Baum in 1912. I thought it was a vivid world, but the main characters no longer resonated in the 21st century. I adapted it for contemporary readers and published it on Amazon and Smashwords in 2014 as QUEEN OF SKY ISLAND. This past year I produced an audiobook available at Audible and Amazon. I have also had it translated into Spanish and will publish that in 2017. The book is 99 cents or free depending upon where you download.

Oh, now, that's just cool. Polychrome of course being my favorite, but I've always been very fond of Capn' Bill, Trot, and Button-Bright.Β

Oh, lovely! Did Polychrome not have her "multicolored gauzy veils" look in Sky Island (it's been a LONG time since I read it)? Poly's my favorite character in all Oz.

I didn't know Button Bright and Polychrome were in "The Sea Fairies!" I've only read the first seven Oz books, I expected that they would come in one of the later Oz books, these are all wonderful designs by the way! I love them allΒ !

I love Trot and Cap'n Bill! She looks so spunky and he's pretty much exactly how I pictured him from Baum's description! I also think this is the first Button Bright fanart I've ever seen!

Very nice. It's always interesting to see people takes on NON-WWOZ characters. I'm really hoping you keep it going a do a little on the Scarecrow of Oz (which is as much a Sky Island book as an Oz Book). I imagine you could design a GREAT Ork and Bumpy Man!
Capn; Bill looks a LOT more professional than the Sou'Westered version by Neill gave us. Button Bright looks a little too put together for the scatterbrain he is, but it's refresing to see him out of the sailor suit and Mary Janes, and in clothing that is more masculine.
Trot I like best of all. The yellow rainboots are a real nice touch (if only she had them on in The Magic of Oz, her feet wouldn't have rooted.)

Thanks! Yeah, I've really enjoyed doing these character designs so I might do some more later. I wanted to update everyone to be a little more contemporary, but I agree that Button Bright lost a little of his "scatterbrained" vibe in the process.

Well, part of it is that Button Bright unlike most of the kids in the Oz series, seems to come from a very rich family (part of the reason why Neill dresses him like that, those are rich kid clothes). It a little questionable how much of his scatterbrained nature is innate and how much comes from being rasied so pampered that he has absolutely no clue how to survive in the real world. In some ways Oz is the best place for him; somewhere where her really has no chance of ever getting hurt.

Ah, I see, I wasn't aware of Button Bright's origins. Yeah, Button Bright really does belong in Oz.

Incidentally at one point on the forum of the IWOC (International Wizard of Oz Club) there was a discussion of the possiblity that BB might have ADD/ADHD. Most votes were in the affirmative, I was sort of unsure (as opposed to Kay Thompson's Hillary Knight's Eloise, who I am REALLY sure has ADHD.)
