Just to offer my two cents on watermarks - if I were a commissioner, I'd definitely prefer to have the uploaded version have a watermark! It'd suck to have people reuploading art that I bought for myself, and it'd suck for the artist to have work they put loads of effort into reuploaded without credit.Β
I can understand that some people find watermarks distracting from the image, but when it comes to combating art theft they're the simplest option an artist has.

I can understand not wanting someone to steal your art, the fact that anyone would do that makes me weep for humanity; but if you don't want other people to enjoy something you commissioned, just ask the artist not to post it at all.

Hello, I'm the person who commissioned this piece! As Electrical said, I requested the image to be WM'd to prevent theft, however I also wanted the image to be shown so others have a chance to enjoy seeing it. Kori worked really hard on this, and they create such beautiful fantastic art that it would be a shame to not be able to post what they create. I'm also an artist and I understand how it can be a huge bummer to take on a commission and create something lovely, only to have the commissioner request it to not be posted. Then you don't get to show your hard work and efforts to the world. I didn't want that to be the case with this image, but at the same time I want my image to be protected, hence WM.
Also, to be fair, Kori SHOULD have watermarks such as this (or a variation of) on ALL of their images in their gallery. Art theft is such a huge deal these days and so many individuals have just no respect for artists, beautiful images get stolen and even reprinted and sold because of bad watermarking. As an artist, I can easily understand how infuriating and frustrating it can be for art theft to continuously happen. Watermarking is so incredibly helpful, if done right. Yes it can reduce the appeal of an image, but let's face it.... at least we as viewers even have a chance to see all the gorgeous artwork online at all. We have been given a gift to see it. We should appreciate that. And to also appreciate, we should support watermarks that protect the artists we love and adore so much.

That kind of presumes that watermarks stop people enjoying artwork in general. Most people can 'see through' the watermark, as it were. And it sucks if you're one of the people who finds it impossible to ignore a watermark, but given that it protects artwork while allowing the majority to still enjoy it, watermarking the image is the sensible option for both commissioner and artist.Β

I was going to use the picture as my phone's wallpaper; but when I noticed the watermark, it ruined it for me. I don't mind signatures, especially if they're not readily apparent or look like handwriting, but a watermark is in blatant contrast to the whole concept of a picture. They're impersonal and unartful in nature.

But by virtue of it having a watermark, it is not free to download, as you do not have 'free access' to an un-watermarked version.
I see the commissioner even told you the reason they wanted the watermark on it was so that the artist could gain recognition from their work- versus keeping the commission entirely private.Β
I would rather be able to see this cute and happy image with a watermark than not at all. Stop acting so self-righteous. If you pay, you can get the free and full image. If not, tough cookies. According to the commission information, this was at the least $30. Probably more. Unless you sat there and paid for this work, you do not deserve or are allowed to do whatever you want with it.Β
