Yay, it's March 31 and time to upload another painting for the PaintPhotoChallenge group! www.deviantart.com/paintphotoc…

This quiet forest waterfall scene was interesting to paint. Thanks to cecil92 for the reference photo.

I adore the simplicity in the trees at the top distance and the reflections in the water at the bottom. Beautiful piece!

Ooh I'm delighted that you like it! I know it differs a lot from the values of the original.

That's what is so great about the group, we all start with the same reference point but it's how we all interpret the subject, I love seeing how the subtle differences create something unique.Β

Yeah I totally agree! I'm finding it hard to wait until the last day of the month before uploading but it's definitely worth the wait. The results are just astounding. I wish there were more participants!

I keep asking people to join, I think a lot are wondering what the catch is, or maybe want there to beΒ a prize,Β rather than just doing it for the fun of creating and sharing results. Can I ask what a carpet cutter is please?

Oh, a Stanley Knife we call that in the UK, so how do you use that, score the paper? πŸ€”

KorsonOraakkeli In reply to MontyMouse [2019-04-03 18:32:48 +0000 UTC]

Well we do usually call it 'mattoveitsi' over here in Finland Yep, I use it for breaking the surface of the paint when I need tiny white highlights. I rather like getting a bit brutal with my artwork at times

MontyMouse In reply to KorsonOraakkeli [2019-04-03 22:33:36 +0000 UTC]

It's certainly worked stunningly with this one, I've tried scratching paint off with the brush handle but I always worry I'll damage the paper and end up with it looking fluffy.Β

I really love how you was able to get from the photo these colours and mix right paints to get them. Pinkish brown in trees are not obvious at all. The same about citron yellow on main rock. I'm always afraid to use this paint, it seems to not match anywhere ^^'... When I'm looking at the water down it's so high skill level that I'm unable to even disassemble it to learn from it. I have no idea how you made the water mixing with foliage there, all I know about is that's trully masterwork .

You're so generous with your praise I believe I just applied layers and more layers to get the desired effect. It took me 2 x 3hrs sessions to finish the piece. I tried to be careful to leave plenty of light and air in the painting.

One might say that's "just only this" while it's not easy at all ^^'... I definetely need to watch/read some more tutorials/books about this medium...

That's cool! Studying is good. Just don't forget to give some leeway to your very own artist's intuition.
