I guess I even drew some influence to my eagle character Marquila. His kind have lived in the Scuttish mountains for millennia, and claim their ancestors came over with the Roman invasion! They even still have Latin has their "language of lore" (not to mention as the basis for their meaningful names)

I like how you impart such an interesting
ancestory to your characters.It really brings
them to life.Have you studied much about the
Roman invasion?

One thing I learned early on, from Mum (who has dabbled in writing herself) was to always develop your main characters - give them a reason for what they do. I apply this to villains and well as heroes, these days - generally, nobody's just in it "for the lulz"
We did look at the Roman civilisation in history, back at school - that and the Egyptians, the medieval period and the World Wars were probably the only bits of history that really interested me (oh, besides the Bible, of course ) - Age of Enlightenment, Renaissance and Industrial Revolution I just found boring as hell.
And of course, I read the Asterix comics sometimes.

Welcome and I have always been interested in military, mostly 20th Century and Medieval era. Though I am able giving you some more information about the equipment your legionnaire is carrying:
- his armor is named lorica segmentata in Latin, it was an early variant of plate armor used in Medieval times, and his helmet is later iron imperial-Gaul type used between 50-150 AD;
- he is holding javelin named pilum , designed to break when enemy would try removing it from pierced shield or body;
- and the short sword worn on sling is staple gladius commonly used in the times of the Roman Republic and Empire till its fall in 476 AD.

It depends on which military you mean, I am able advising you about those:
- Ancient Roman
- Medieval European
- 16th-18th Century European
- 19th Century European
- Oriental Muslim ( 632 AD-1800 AD )
- World War 1 ( European )
- World War 2 ( all the campaign theaters )
- Post WW2 Warsaw Pact ( 1945-91, Soviet Union and its puppet states )
- Post WW2 NATO ( since 1945 till present )

By term "military", I understand the whole equipment used by armed forces: individual weapons, team weapons, vehicles, uniforms ( with patterns ) and rank insignia worn by military personnel.
