They definitely had to have had some moments like this in between jobs. Their relationship stays way too static in the game.
Also, Anders' face in the last panel when realizing that they're having a civil conversation and getting along is absolutely priceless

Yeah, they hung out with the same friend group for 6? 7? more? years, and a lot of their interactions we see in the game are in very stressful situations where they aren't exactly at their best. They must have been getting along fairly well most of the time or Hawke would have had to stage some sort of intervention. They have enough similarities I like to think they could work it out and be friends.

This is sooo true! I was always wondering why the two of them are not getting along (except that one is for mage-respect and the other for mage-chop-of-their-heads........). But they have so much in common! They brood a lot, they hide from their hunters, they get angry easily and WHILE doing that they both GLOW! Awesome!

I think Fenris is less in favor of chopping off mage heads (except for two very specific mage heads) and more in favor of mages leaving him alone. Which is not very compatible with Anders dealing with their own trauma by being as in-your-face about being a mage as possible. They are alike in so many ways, though! Maybe in time they'll start seeing it as a positive thing. Neither of them is in much of a position to lower their guard around each other during the events of DA2, but I like to think there are occasional bonding moments then, too.
