480 BC - Greco-Persian wars - Greek island of Skiathos

The Greeks had send three triremes precursors against the Persian fleet, one from Athens, one from Aegina and one from Trizina. Their mission was to sail near the island of Skiathos and warn if the enemy appeared.

The sudden appearance of the enormous Persian fleet panicked the Greek ships. The Athenian crashed to the Thessalian coast and the crew escaped by land. The Trizinean failed to escape and after the Phoenicians took over the ship, they sacrificed the most beautiful Greek captive to their gods.

Then they surrounded the Aeginean ship but lost many men because the marine Pytheas of Ishenou fought like rabid even when all other Greeks surrendered. He stopped fighting only when he fainted from bleeding.

The Persian commander admired his bravery and prevented the Phoenicians to kill him. He ordered a doctor to cure him and kept him in honourable captivity.

Pytheas was released at the Battle of Salamis, when his Aeginian relative Polykritos, captured the ship which Pytheus captors served and saved him.
