when you first see Ruby (THIS BIT HAS STUCK WITH ME EVER SINCE I SAW THE EPISODE LMAO) and Sapphire asks "did they hurt you?" and Ruby says "who cares?" she's always cared about Sapphire more than herself not only because it was her duty, but because... she just loves her.
And then there's also Sapphire who's personality rings true as well; reminding Ruby that she's worth something. Sapphire is the one who answers "who cares?" with "I do!"--and likewise, in this new episode, Sapphire breaks away from everything she's ever known to save Ruby. And in response to Ruby's "now we're here forever," Sapphire says "what about you? we're here together"...

we never see the rubies fuse, and I think the "dance" was figured out as a way to help differnt gems synchronize

very true. they could have! that would be adorable omg. I know they made fusion between different gems as a whole a thing though. The Crystal Gems were inspired by them and incorporated it into their tactics. and of course Jasper did it, but only when she became desperate.
