I'll start this critique by saying that overall, this image really pops! It is really impactful, and appealing!

You have brought great interaction between the highlights and the shadows. Additionally, you have found a great balance between sharpness and softness. The dirt and gravel of the road retain a rather hard feeling, while the grass seems to be softer and more inviting.

Compositionally, the road is fantastic! For me, it is placed just right on the left side of the image, and the way it winds through the hills going across the image from left to right, as it disappears into the horizon is stunning! It's a real focal point for my eye.

Though, there are a couple of areas that I might tweak, if this were my image. While the colors overall are vivid and wonderful, I do think that the sky is a little too blue, or perhaps a little too light. The bright saturated blue in the sky is a bit distracting for me. I might increase the levels of black in the sky, so that you retain a saturated, but darker color. One that is just slightly less vivid, and doesn't distract the eye as much. The other area of critique that I have is the vertical composition of the image. The sky/clouds are taking up nearly half of the image, which feels like too much to me. If I were cropping it, I would probably crop just underneath the cloud in the upper right corner. That would do a couple things: It would make the clouds in the center left appear to fill the sky more, it would not place as much emphasis on the sky as is done now, and it would turn this image into a slightly panoramic format, which I think could really add another level of appeal to the piece.

For me, the ground and road are insanely interesting, and well done. In my opinion, addressing those two issues with the sky would take this piece from a 9.5 to a 10.

So I did some quick edits to darken the blues, reduce the highlights, and crop some of the sky out for better balance.

Wow!  I really see the difference!  I don't know if you or anyone else would agree with me, but I think the darker sky, and that bit of a crop just make this great image that much better.  it really is a stunning capture!

Haha, I didn't notice it till after I made the edits, but when I went to replace the file, I could definitely see it

Thank you for the critique!  I did experiment a bit with cropping the clouds when I was editing, so I'll take another look, and for the sky color, that's still something I struggle with alot when I edit XD  So I'll see what I can come up with while keeping the visual impact of the photo intact.

When i first saw this image i instantly loved the shot. What I liked about the shot? I liked the road in the foreground that draws you into the image then when you follow the road down the track you see a beautiful mountain landscape that seems to go on forever. I liked the way you processed the image bringing out the details and the colours are vibrant.
What i did not like about the shot? I did not like the cloud in the middle of the sky and how it is slightly overexposed for my liking and is a little distracting from the landscape.
Overall great processing and composition. Well done e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

I recently visited Colorado myself and the landscape is incredible. I think you did a great job in capturing the size and depth of the place. It feels endless there. You also did a great job in capturing the contrast of the vibrant greens, and blues and the textures. The only criticism I have is that focus didn't enhance this shot. The gravel looks distorted and out of place like you were moving too fast.

Thank you! As a matter of fact, I actually was.  I took this from the back of a moving jeep.  I'm still trying to find the right balance to keep detail quality while moving.

I have the same problem. Oddly enough, my cell phone usually captures things while I'm moving better than a real camera. Not sure how that happens, but I don't suggest that as the solution of course. Just find it funny.

Colorado is beautiful though.

I absolutely love this state. Born and raised in Colorado. Colorado has so much to offer to anyone, especially photographers! There's desert like places, cityscapes, beautiful areas like this photo, unique red, white, brown, green hills/mountains, and so much more. The only thing this state does not have is the ocean...

Definitely. It will not be anytime soon . But hopefully next summer/spring I will have enough money for a road trip out there.

I certainly agree with *DanielleMiner 's criqitue. It's a great shot, but some parts I would have personally toned down a little as well; but that is personal preference. I'm guessing this is an HDR composite?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KRHPhotography In reply to overseer [2013-10-21 20:54:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, this is an HDR from 5 different version of one RAW photo.  Out of curiosity, what would be some of the changed you would make?

thepixelworks In reply to KRHPhotography [2013-10-21 21:15:56 +0000 UTC]

I think it's great, I would just desaturate it a little. Maybe take down the highlights a bit in the sky. That's all. But again, that's a personal opinion, nothing more.

Anytime. I have spent hours fine tuning HDR compositions. It's so easy to over and under do it. The important thing is though that you are happy with it!
