Description Again, not sure where to place this.

This is a previous Illustration assignment that I forgot to post after I finished it because of spring break. The assignment was to illustrate a magazine article of our choice. I chose an article about health care for dancers from Dance Magazine. (I know you're all shocked I'd choose something having to do with dancers.) Basically the article offered solutions to dancers for health insurance because most go without and it only takes one injury or serious illness to do you in financially.

So naturally I drew a dancer with a caduses. I wish I remembered enough ballet lingo to make some clever play on words with "caduses" for a title, because I know there must be one out there.

You know what I reeeeally love about this picture? ^^ That tiny bit of pink ambient reflection creeping up on the underside of the caduses' sphere. I'm dead serious- that one little attention to detail just speaks volumes, 'yo. XD;

Btw, I must know~ because I'm assuming you used the Pen Tool ~how did you vary the line weight? ::didn't know the exact step-by-step procedure::

Sorry I'm so late in replying!

Yes, I did use the pen tool, but in Adobe Illustrator, not Photoshop. The pen tool in Photoshop is completely different than the one in Illustrator. If you have Illustrator I can tell you how I used it. Kinda.

I occasionally use Adodbe Illustrator CS (it's that much nicer than Photoshop 7's pen tool because it actually has *gasp* a drag-able menu!) XD;

I use the Illustrator CS2 pen tool by creating an anchor point, clicking my next point and making my arc (etc etc), click the middle dot and continue my curves until I get the shape I want. I create line variation by actually drawing shapes for my lines instead of using the line created by one pass of the pen tool. Does that make sense? It's hard to explain in type. In other words, all of my line work is pen tool shapes that are filled in with black.

Eeee, I read ya loud and clear. (That's.... quite some dedication on your part. )

Thanks for sharing your insight, btw! (Here's hoping for the day when they write automatic line variation into the programming… ^~; )

I suppose you could try to do it like some people do in Photoshop using the brush with a tablet so pen pressure produces line variation. I find that more difficult to do than just making shapes with the pen in Illustrator, though.

Ok, this is a bit weird, but I have a character, a fanfiction character, who's a red-headed mad doctor, and ballet was a part of her childhood. Could I possibly use this image to illustrate a dream in her journal?

I am so glad I'm not her. The snakes would scare me so bad. Wonderful composition. Coloring and lighting not what I would have chose but that's probably just personal style.

Actually that's the coloring that the prof recommended when we sat down together at the computer and looked at my color studies. My studies didn't look anything like this but since he's the professional with more years under his belt than I've been alive, I figured I'd listen to him. : P
